Every 16 hrs a woman is shot and killed by an intimate partner.  Gun violence has been deemed a "public health crisis" by the American Medical Association.  America needs better research into gun safety and violence in order to make better gun policies to prevent this growing crisis.  Every day the news is filled with stories of gun violence and mass shootings.  I feel helpless.  This poem was my attempt to vocalize that feeling and sense of urgency.

"My Arsenal" by Asherah

Anger is my arsenal

This pen my lethal weapon

As I raise my voice to fight

This political armageddon.

A war wrought with destruction

Of innocent observers

Saving victims of this violence

With verbal life-preservers.

It’s all I have to offer

It’s all I have to give.

These words

This poem

My honesty

In hopes that we may live

Free of bloodied bullets

And of suffocating fear

Unsure what lies ahead

Our future is unclear.

Without new regulations

To fix this thriving issue

Deaths from growing gun violence

Will exponentially continue

My scribbles scream for help

Its frantic pleas forsaken

Trusting you to keep us safe

We were thoroughly mistaken.

This poem is dedicated to every politician that has refused to pass responsible gun legislation and is a voice for those who will die in the days ahead because of our leaders incompetence, willful ignorance, and greed.  https://www.ama-assn.org/press-center/press-releases/ama-calls-gun-viole...

Wow this poem speaks a lots of volume. Thanks for writing up. In fact we have to all rise up against this violence. Maybe you can consider a petition about it on change.org. Maybe with many signatures will will get someone to hear you. Have a nice weekend.

Hi Lisbeth! For the past ten years I have signed petitions, written Letters to the Editor, and contacted my representatives. I joined Moms Demand Action, Sandy Hook Promise and Everytown for Gun Safety. I feel like our voices have been muted by the NRA's influence within the political society. (My representative alone has received over $30,000 from the NRA). It is infuriating and depressing as gun violence continues to happen and thousands continue to die unnecessarily every year. I will continue to try new ways of sharing my concerns...poetry has given me a different kind of voice.

Hi Asherah,

Wow! That's a not-good statistic. I was worried about the way gun legislation, or lack thereof, was going before we moved to Spain, and it just doesn't seem to be improving yet. I feel like it's been going on so long that now it's going to take awhile to implement. I definitely don't understand that owning a gun makes someone feel safer, but I felt like I was the minority while living there. That, personally, made me feel even more unsafe. I wish there was an easy answer.

Thanks so much for sharing your views and powerful poem. I may just have to share this on FB because I don't like the state of affairs one bit, either:-(

You may want to consider submitting this for either the "Peace and Security" story or the "A World Free of Violence" story calls? If so, this is the story topics link: https://www.worldpulse.com/raise-your-voice/all-prompts

Hi Jill,

Please feel free to share my poem. Thanks for your suggestion about submitting it--I'm still learning how World Pulse works. It is terrifying when you begin to learn the influence the NRA (National Rifle Association) has within politics of the United States. It spent almost half a BILLION dollars in the 2016 election! https://www.huffpost.com/entry/nra-2016-spending_n_5a0dd3e6e4b0b17e5e14e...

It is criminal that our government won't pass anti-gun violence legislation.
