Thank you for sharing your article Ashleigh.  It reminded me of when I was in Hungary twenty some years ago for a college program and we were told that under no circumstances were we to have any contact with the Roma.  It was winter when I visited and I remember one cold morning, our class needed to catch a train and while we waited inside the warm station, the Roma had to wait outside.  It did not make sense then why they had to be treated differently and after reading your article and seeing that attitudes have not really changed, it still does not make sense.

I admit, I am ignorant of Roma history, so I do not know what event(s) transpired to make them so hated for so long.  But I do realize that this hatred is so ingrained, it will also take a massive educational experience for the majority of the population in order for the Roma to be more accepted.

Dear Kristina,

Thank you for reading and reaching out!

Roma migrated from Northern India around 800 years ago. When they first migrated to Eastern Europe they were actually seen in a positive light. They worked as blacksmiths and musicians and served in local armies. Eventually with the rise of the Ottoman Empire perceptions began to change when many communities thought Roma were Turkish spies. They were enslaved for several centuries after that and then many were killed during the Holocaust.

I made a short interactive map about their journey and history if you're interested:

Thanks again for reading my article and taking the time to comment.

Best,

Ashleigh

Isn't it amazing that the only power many have is hatred?
