Introducing myself and my journal: Happiness is there for the taking and making - Oprah Winfery

About Me:
Greetings fellow World Pulse members,

I am delighted to begin my journey with this fantastic collective community! I recently graduated with a M.A. in International Development and Service. During the graduate program, I focused my studies on women and children empowerment issues. One of my favorite stories of an inspirational women leader is the story of Tererai Trent. I first heard about her journey on an episode of the Oprah Winfrey show, where she was featured as a guest and highlighted as a representative from the book Half the Sky, written by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. Tererai grew up in a rural village in Zimbabwe where she grew up dreaming of an education. Because of her family’s financial struggles, she was expected to stay at home and focus on her household responsibilities rather than her studies. As she became a young women her village received a visit by an international aid worker, Jo Luck, who asked each women what their biggest dream was for their future. Jo Luck then proceeded to ask the women to write down their dreams. Tererai wrote down the dreams of obtaining a Bachelor degree, Masters degree and a Ph.D. on scrap piece of paper and buried it a tin under a tree. Shorty after the visit with Jo Luck, Tererai set off to America to pursue all three degrees, without fail. Today Tererai speaks to women around the world and shares her story of success. Jo Luck set off to become the president of Heifer International.

I share this testimony because it is the story that inspired me to pursue a career working to empower women worldwide. I believe everyone ought to have the right to dream and have the right to pursue his or her deepest wishes.
