The Turning Point

24TH August 2008 was a turning point in my life. Deciding enough is enough on the menace of burying our family members due to HIV/AIDS. This was the burial of my sister in law; our husbands are brothers. For the first time in my life I was give a micro phone to give eulogy and last respect to the deceased. For a moment I thought and I found myself talking more about transformation in the society. Education for the girl child, how to tackle the issue of high school dropout rate for the young girls, Women empowerment and women coming together to denounce retrogressive cultural practice of wife inheritance that has contributed to many women acquiring HIV/AIDS. I was the first women to speak in a gathering and addressing critical societal issues. This also gave birth to RAMULA HIV SUPPORT GROUP. This group began with 4 members living with HIV/AIDS. Today the membership is over 350 in 5 locations. These grassroots women have helped many women who suffer silently with HIV without seeking medication and more so educating many women and widows on the consequences of wife inheritance. I envision a society that is free from all forms of dehumanizing cultural practices; through World Pulse I know we can achieve this.
