Anemia: A Silent killer

earing a khaki salwar kameez, and holding her five-month daughter in her arms, Jamsheda waits for her turn in the dispensary at Gool, she looks pale and flushed out, maybe because she come by foot covering 13 kilometers to get her daughter cured.
“There are no hospitals in our area so I have to come here to get my daughter checked”, says Jamsheeda from a remote village 13 kilometers from Gool.
One can easily conclude that by walking such huge distances, Jamsheeda’s paler appearance can be justified but as we moved across the district every other woman looked pale.
According to the local doctors here, almost every woman here has anemia and hence they appear pale, fragile and lean.
“Women here have a very huge workload, they work at homes and farms and hence have a double load than men, and they look after their children, cattle, agriculture and other household chores. They have to fetch water from far of distances, this makes them weak and in such situations, they are not able to take enough care of themselves, with the result, there is an acute deficiency of iron in their blood that makes them vulnerable to another disease as well,” Dr Shafi, BMO Gool.
