Virtues Versus Values

Every great act that has positively impacted human history was a result of vision’, said Myles Munroe. This fact that every great cause that gives hope to many is started by one personality is a starting point for me. Travelling on the path of such people who made their voices count is also a big motivation. They made a decision and took the responsibility of making the world better. That is the kind of legacy I desire and envision - a world where everyone counts; where women are free to make contributions and decisions on matters that concern them and the development of society, and accorded due respect for same irrespective of gender, skin or status. I desire to be a social visionary and leading voice for transformative social change.

Albert Einstein in his book The world as I see it said “the true value of a human being is determined primarily by the measure and the sense in which he has attained liberation from the self. Our whole actions and desires are bound with the existence of other human beings. We eat food that others have grown, wear clothes that others have made; live in houses that others have built. The greater part of our knowledge and beliefs has been communicated to us by other people through the medium of a language which others have created. This tells us that our whole being is dependent on another”.

Honestly when I think about these words, I see motivation and the endurance I need to keep me on course. There are powerful bridges for conveying us from our current position to a new period that better expresses our common humanity, and we just have to present our voice in such a way as to get attention. I cannot afford to do what most women have always done – just bearing and rearing children and caring for the family alone. I also want to experience freedom by going to places that are supposedly ‘not meant for women’ to partake in decisions that will have an effect on my personal life and ultimately the lives of others, without fear or prejudice.

I believe being a Voices of Our Future Correspondent will enable me serve my local community and make a difference. I see it as a platform where we women that see the power and beauty of women can gather to exchange notes. We all have energies and brilliance we need to draw upon. We must be bold and true to ourselves to have the power to reinvent ourselves.

Also, I believe being a VOF correspondent will provide an opportunity for meeting inspiring leaders, strategic organizers and like-minded women who have formed and utilized diverse methods for securing justice and support, even when it means creating something out of nothing. I believe I will be able to achieve sustainability which matters in my work, as well as link inner practice to outer transformation. As the renowned Stephen Covey said, ‘“The most important vision of all is to develop a sense of self, a sense of your own destiny, a sense of your unique mission and role in life, a sense of purpose and mean it.”. Vision is the beginning of the process of reinventing one’s self.
