Slash-and-burn agriculture--a practice in which people burn forests to make room for agriculture--continues to threaten many forests in the high plateau of Minembwe. For example: Byarubira forest and Mutunda.
Poverty, overpopulation, mining, and the multiplication of herds of livestock are some other phenomenon which contribute to deforestation.
The cutting of trees to make wood for heating or for charcoal is also a cause of deforestation on a large scale. In this environment, the exploitation of the forest is excessive and not very concerned with sustainable development.
