As I am, so is my Community..Speak UP and be Heard!

I am an internet addict, I must admit.
With my profession being in IT - My time is mostly spent on the internet, researching on topics to be updated with latest technology, to network with others, and have come to know how essential being \"connected\" is. Any information I find relevant to my colleagues, family, people, I pass on to – from opportunities to news and updates. The internet is such an essential tool that I feel all should learn and use effectively.
I remember back in Uni studying for my degree, internet was fairly new then, and with limited number of computers for assignments, and internet and slow connections at the time, there was never any chance to really grasp the unlimited values of internet.
I only wished now that internet was as much available as it is now, considering the outdated books and limited resources that were available.
Building that interest and also having an interest in social, community affairs has led me to be part of various mailing lists that take my fancy, learning opportunities, technology and empowerment for women. The Pacific Women Information Network (PACWIN) mailing list is how I found World Pulse and VOF and I read with interest and thought it was more for journalists but realized it is for women who have the passion to speak, act and change the world in their own little way and within their communities. Reading profiles of women on the site is interesting and there are a lot of common issues.
I am one of more privileged, where I have access to such services- there are many women in my country, especially in the very remote areas, that if given the opportunity they would love to be heard - Culture is one thing that suppresses women to speak up where men have always been the \"voice\", but times are changing and more women are becoming educated and breadwinners - for us who are equipped with this knowledge should spread it out to our fellow sisters.
I hope to bring out the best of my two passions and have them intertwine, assisting in empowerment and development – I.T and the passion of helping people/women to improve their livelihoods to be better informed and updated with technology.
One of my projects that I am working on for my home province is establishing an e-information centre where such does not exist and any information into the province is through word of mouth, local radio and daily newspapers that is received days late. Knowledge and information is unlimited with internet access.
Thus educating a woman – educates a family. The slogan for a group that I am associated with, Leadership PNG Inc. states: As I am, so is my community, my organisation, and my country. It is up to each of us, what we do, that determines the fate and destiny of our community - it is up to us to bring change, to speak up, speak out and be heard!
