The Forgotten Group Uplifting Themselves

Celine
Posted October 9, 2018 from Nigeria

We uplift ourselves by ourselves even when we are forgotten in our society. It is not our fault that we are living with disabilities neither is it offense to be born a woman.

The Divine Foundation for Disabled Persons held empowerment talks in the past couple of weeks with persons living with different forms of disabilities. At Asaba in Delta state we inspired 45 persons with disabilities, courtesy of Mama Omatsola Williams, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development. We are not surprised that non-disabled persons who were members of staff of the ministry were keenly attentive. We had testaments from the staff of how uplifted they were, and at the same time challenged that a woman with a disability can be such a resource and an agent of change.

At Isheri a suburb area in Lagos we created the opportunity and talked to listeners numbering more than 70 persons with visual impairment. Among them were women of different ages, young and old. Also in Surulere, another area in Lagos, we had talk with 20 women who are visually impaired. Motivating and inspiring persons with disabilities with true life stories give them hope. I lead them to see light in the tunnel. At the end of the talks we had course to appreciate ourselves and celebrated our resilience.

On individual basis 5 women who live with different forms of disabilities were empowered through skills building and little funds to start up. This lifts them away from street begging and / or assist them take care of immediate needs like food, sanitary pads, drugs, etc. The younger ones were assisted with counseling, information and connections to life building opportunities.

In a partnership with a women empowerment organization in Lagos we are planning for our next skill acquisition workshop which will come up in 2nd week of November 2018. We will teach 30 women how to make wig. The women will also require materials to start up wig making on their own. We are optimistic that our desire to help women with disabilities overcome poverty, gain voice, acquire skills, live dependent lifes and refrain from street begging will be met. One woman at a time, we will uplift women with disabilities to live a life of self-worth and integrity.
