When Is The Right Time To Talk About This?
May 13, 2019
First story
What is Puberty was the topic at Helena Primary School on Thursday 28 September 2018. We had dialogue with boys and girls aged between 9 and 12 years. I remember how uncomfortable this topic made me feel when i was in primary school (especially when the "menstruation" talk began) and here now i was delivering on the same subject. Puberty was a very relevant topic back then and even more now as today our children are exposed to so much information about sex and relationships on television, social media, magazines etc that by the time they reach puberty they may be familiar with some advanced ideas. Its sad, though, to note that many parents are not comfortable talking to their children about this subject.
This "talk" however remains an important part of the parent's job because not all information that reaches your child's ears is/shall be reliable. Let's not wait for our children to come to us with questions because that day may never come especially if your child does not know whether its right or wrong to talk to you about it. Rather let us initiate this "talk" with them as early as 8/9 years old. Yes they may seem young but some girls are already wearing training bras by then and boys ' voices begin to change just a few years later. #FamilyBondsFoundation #parentingissues
