When a woman has to flee her marital home because she refuses to bear another child for her husband it is indeed a sad commentary on the state of what countless women have to endure in many parts of Africa. The irony of this case scenario is that if she could not bear a child, she would be ridiculed by the husband and community and called "barren". In this instance, even though she does have other kids, the man views her as a baby making machine who should be willing to pop out children at his will and pleasure. What a typical selfish and egotistical behavior. As a woman myself, I totally get the practical viewpoint of this wife and mother who is thinking about their real life struggles including feeding, clothing, school fees and other bills. Moreover, she is sleeping on a mat on the bare floor! It's outrageous to say the least. Thanks for bringing this sad story to life Chomsky. It is my hope that this woman gets the proper redress and is not forced to have another child against her will since that will be violating her human rights as well as her right to choose whatever reproductive outcomes she desires.

Dear friend,

Most women lack reproductive or other rights over their bodies and lives even now. These challenges make me wonder if our civilization is progressing or regressing!

Please write more about such important issues.

Cheers, Pushpa

Dear Chomsky,

You illustrate with a alarming story how women from around the world need to gain control for their reproductive rights. Specific stories like yours need to be told and retold to garner community, national and world attention.

I commend you for your efforts on the behalf of women.

All the best,

This story exemplifies a patriarchal society, and the power of the woman in the family unit structure. The woman not only suffers when the family does not move forward with what the husband wants but also the entire family suffers. Who will care for the current children when she is chased from the home?

Additionally, this woman is worried about other important factors, such as food and clothes, important to the well being of the family. The husbands need to be educated on the importance of family as a unit and to make decisions in the best interest of the family, and the women need to be empowered to do so as well. Their empowerment can positively impact the children and hopefully end the cycle.

Thank you so much for sharing this story and please encourage other women in similar predicaments to tell their stories.

Praying that the right support is available and that change is imminent.
