A Note on Frontline Journals from World Pulse's Managing Editor

Dear World Pulse Correspondents,

What a pleasure to finally have a chance to connect with you all! For those of you who don't know me, I am World Pulse's Managing Editor. I have been following along from behind the scenes as you all have embarked on this journey, and I can't even begin to express how wonderful it has been to see you all emerge as the true voices of World Pulse! This process has been a long time in the making, and it's so lovely to see the World Pulse vision come alive through your posts.

I am particularly excited because this month is all about Frontline Journals. This format is one of our favorites at World Pulse—it is an intimate look into the lives of women on the front lines of conflict, the true embodiment of our tag line: "Global Issues Through the Eyes of Women." In the past we've published Frontline Journals from Malalai Joya of Afghanistan, Theary Seng of Cambodia, Fatima Sultan Syed of Kashmir, and most recently, Lydia Cacho Ribeiro of Mexico. It's truly an honor to add all of your voices to the mix, and I can't wait to read your finished pieces!

Because this type of article is the cornerstone of World Pulse's editorial style, I am excited to announce that there is a special prize at the end of this assignment. Our editorial team will choose up to three of your Frontline Journals to be published on WorldPulse.com. By mid-August, we will choose the three stories and begin the process of editing the pieces for publication. (Of course we will run the edited pieces by the winning writers before publishing on the editorial side of the site.) We will be taking into account the following when making our decision:

— Is the story timely, relevant, and speak to a larger issue?
— Does the writer connect with the reader on a personal level?
— Is the writing strong, compelling, and solutions-oriented? (*Note: World Pulse will not disqualify a story based on grammar or spelling—that's what editors are for!)
— Does the story fill in details that are largely missing from mainstream coverage?

You are all doing a fabulous job meeting the above requirements. From what I have read of your drafts, I can tell that we are going to have a hard time choosing just three!
