Protesting Dowry in Bangladesh

Hello friends,

I just read this article on BBC.com, \"Bangladesh bride disowns her 'dowry demanding' husband\" (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-15739640), and thought others here might be interested. I know dowry is technically illegal in India as well, but that 'gifts' are still commonly given from the bride's family to the groom and his family. I've also read much regarding violence and harassment surrounding dowry and how it can make daughters seem to be a 'burden' in the family. I'm wondering what you all in the India Cafe feel about the practice of dowry?

Rakiba on PulseWire who is from Bangladesh has also recently posted on this issue. (http://worldpulse.com/node/46811)

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this subject!

Emily
