Who We Are: Volunteer Introductions in Comments Below!

Emily Garcia
Posted March 20, 2015 from United States

Thank you to each and every one of you for joining this group and for all you contribute to the World Pulse community!

Eliza and I thought we would start a "Getting to know you" post where each member of the group meets another over private message and then introduces them to the whole group by replying here to this post.

Because this probably sounds a little confusing, please see a bullet-point list of steps below to participate:

  1. First, Eliza and I will randomly pair each member of this group with another. We'll let you know who your partner is by private message.
  2. Then, in pairs, get to know each other over private message. If you like, you can refer to the sample "getting to know you" questions below.
  3. After you've connected with your partner, come back to this post and in a comment introduce your new friend to the group!

Just so you know, there are several staff members hanging out in this group, so they'll be included too! :)

Look out for a private message matching you with another member soon!

Here are some sample questions we can use to get to know each other:

  • What brought you to World Pulse?
  • How long have you been a World Pulse volunteer?
  • What do you most enjoy about volunteering?
  • What's something you're looking forward to this year?
  • What energizes you?
  • Who is someone that you admire?

Thanks for participating!

Love,

Emily and Eliza

Hi everyone!

I'm pleased to introduce you all to my new friend Julie (jacollura)! Julie began volunteering with World Pulse 3 years ago, and is preparing to go to Uganda this summer to volunteer with S.O.U.L. Foundation where she'll bring English language training to women living in rural areas. Her project sounds amazing, check out more info about it here and also read her latest journal post about it!

Beyond cultivating her passions for education and women's empowerment, Julie also loves music and is a musician herself! She plays the clarinet on occasion and sings Jazz. Welcome, Julie!

I am so happy to have been introduced to Uhkeng in Bangladesh. I am excited that she works to educate indigenous people in her community. I firmly believe that education is the only answer for individual empowerment, and that individual empowerment is the only way to win hearts and minds.

It so happens that an ambassadorship that I am involved in is also focusing women and indigenous peopls at their once-every-five-year conference in October. This is a perfect match for me.

Thank you, Emily and Eliza.

I retired from Intel Corporation as a project manager on Jan 1, 2014 and then came to work for World Pulse for one year. I just retired from World Pulse and now I am a World Pulse volunteer...just like all of you!! I love being retired but I also love staying connected to World Pulse through volunteering. Being a Community Listener has changed my life. I am humbled by the knowledge that what we do as online community volunteers has such a positive impact on our community members by assuring them that their "voice" has been heard. This is an amazing organization and WE are amazing volunteers!!! Cheers to all of us!

Hello, World Pulse family!

I would like to introduce my friend Muhorakeye Esperance. Two years ago she discovered World Pulse thanks to Mama Neema, president of the local Maman Shujaa Centre in Bukavu, DRC. Now, Muhorakeye enjoys reading the stories of all the different women from around the world who post here about women's rights. She is truly inspired and motivated by this global community--being able to help her fellow countrywomen solve their problems gives her a new sense of importance. Understanding new technologies has also helped her to make international friends. The women of DRC's story begins now--thanks to World Pulse, she says!

Hi All,

Thanks so much for participating in this activity!

I just realized I haven't introduced myself yet, so I'll do so now.

I'm Emily. I've been a part of World Pulse since 2009 when I began as an intern reviewing books, films, and music for the World Pulse print magazine. I am the eldest in my family and one of five sisters. So you see I've been blessed with sisterhood nearly my whole life! :) I live in Portland, Oregon, a beautiful city, and recharge my spirit with trips into the mountains and forests! I love reading, and biking, and hiking, and spending time with friends and family. I have a niece and a nephew that I love dearly and can't wait to visit again soon.

Pushpa is a writer, journalist, and trainer who lives in Bangalore, India, with her husband, Ram.  I enjoy writing and mentoring children from socio-economically marginalized families.

She's been involved in campaigns for the rights of women, LGBTIQ and indigenous people. Poetry and photography also interest her.  As well as writing about marginalized children and women's achievements and challenges

She's been an active listener on World Pulse for a long time now!

Hello everyone, I know that for so many of us, life sometimes gets so busy and choked up with many demands; and we crave for a much needed break to catch up on some important updates. Hmmmmm, it's such an exciting experience to connect with and get to know more about the many amazing volunteers who make the World Pulse community go round.

My name is Olanike, a Nigerian who is passionate about nature and issues that bother on women's empowerment and social entrepreneurship. I am the forth of five children and my hobbies include research, cookery and nature appreciation. The green side of me is what makes me 'me' and sometimes, I feel like painting the whole world with very striking green colors. Aha!

I joined World Pulse in 2008, and it's been a very worthwhile and rewarding experience for me in terms of my personal and career development and networking experience. I am happy to connect with the many change inspiring and leading individuals who make up the World Pulse community.

Hello dear sisters,

It's a great pleasure to get introduced to all of you.

My name is Bayan Itani. I joined WorldPulse as a VOF correspondent in 2013. Then, I was lucky enough to be a listener in Women Weave the Web program.

I am here again because I believe empowering women worldwide is a basic step for the enhancement of our human society. Indeed, women's problems cannot be addressed if they weren't communicated and disclosed at the first place.

Am looking forward to this :)

Thank you Emily for nudging me to post here and meet all of you. I am glad to be part of World Pulse and to be doing more for others -- in particular listening. I am looking forward to the person I will be paired with.

A little bit about myself, I am a disability generalist who advocate and teach on the rights of PWD and more, I've been doing this work for years and everyday I learn something new. I hope through WP I can encourage more women with disabilities to speak up and join in the sisterhood.

As hobby, I blog, read and travel.

Because of the introductions made easy by Eliza and Emily, I am happy to be able to introduce Umaiyal, a Tamil woman from Sri Lanka who describes herself as passionate, and whose work and writing show this to be very true. Umaiyal became aware of gender studies at University, and dove in fast and deep, applying thought and action to the inequities and dangers that girls and women experience. She has reported in depth on the trafficking of girls and women, covering Nepal through India, with detail and with description of what needs to be in place for women who have been found. Umaiyal describes herself also as a change maker, and so she is. I am so glad to have been put in touch, and to be linking arms with her here through WorldPulse.

Thank you Emily for the welcome and the opportunity to introduce myself to the group.

Hallo everyone. I joined World Pulse global community in 2009 and i've been so inspired by all the stories from my fellow sisters across the globe. I'm the third born in a family of 6 girls and 1 boy and as you can see i've grown up with plenty of people around. I'm blessed with a family of my own, married to a Pastor and with 3 beautiful children, a boy and 2 girls. I love being a part of the World Pulse family and have been priviledged to have the opportunity to get my voice to be heard. My passion for mentoring girls and young women has led me in several directions including World Pulse and i'm glad to be part of the first volunteers in the World pulse & Intel She Will Connect program.

I enjoyed reading all of you intro's and i look forward to more engagement with the members of the group.
