Why women and girls?!

Cameroon has had a good number of upheavals and I have these 2, I want to talk about.
In the early 90s my country had its 1st democratic election and the result of course sent the citizens to the streets. I was in Bamenda, in the North West Region and the opposition stronghold in Cameroon. They said there was fraud.
Riots were everywhere and the police came out. They came with guns, batons, tear gas etc to face an unarmed crowd. They beat up people, threw tear gas at them, shot some who died. Schools were closed. In some areas, they looted, destroyed and raped women and girls. There was chaos everywhere. They used bottles and their manhood to rape women and girls. Eishhh!
I was a young girl then, excited to get into secondary school, with a lot of aspirations but the occurrence at that time gave me a different mindset.
Advocacy was not as strong as it is now but thank God for the \"Takembeng\". This was a group of women who had attained menopause. They had heard of all the torture and wrongdoings and decided to come together to fight for their people. These women wore no underwear. They walked on the streets and when they got to major roads were the military were present, their weapons were their \"Vs\". They exposed them to these wicked people and any of them who saw it, got their reward which was death to most of them. These women were celebrated and they rescued their people. Young women and girls did not belong to the \"Takembeng\".

That was in the 90s. In November precisely the 28th 2016, the military again invaded the University of Buea to stop students who were protesting for their rights. They came with their usual tear gas, guns, batons etc. As usual, they broke into students' hostels, looted, beat them up and of course, raped the girls! Hmm
They arrested students including girls and took them to cells where the torture continued.
This Era is different and the strategies as well. We are signing petitions online and making use of the social media. We want justice.
The military has destroyed so many lives and future. One of the rape victims has gone home to her. Paruents, not sure of coming to complete her academic year. Othere are at the hospital receiving treatment with the hope to continue theirlives normally.
We need to join our efforts to put to an end to this kind of animalistic attitudes. We need to speak out, denounce and be #strong

The government has to render justice and human rights must be respected.
