ITOMBWE NATURAL RESERVE IMPORTANT BIODIVERSITY

The Itombwe forest massif is situated in Eastern DRC,north-west of Lake Tanganyika.
It is made up of a unique patchwork of intermediate and montane forest (with limited afroalpine vegetation at its higher reaches) interspersed with montane grasslands. The area has always attracted much attention from the conservation community. The biological surverys that were carried out in the 1990s confirmed the exceptional biological value of the massif, which harbours 583 species of birds of which 30 are endemic to the Albertine Rift,72 species of mammals(4 endemic),35 species of reptiles (5endemic),23 species of amphibans (16 endemic).
Besides the vast array of species endemic to the Albertine Rift (that are targets species for the Ecoregion) .
Itombwe also holds important populations of Eastern Lowland Gorillas beringei ,Eastern Robust Chimpanzees .

Le massif forestier d'Itombwe est situé au RDC de l'Est, au nord-ouest du lac Tanganyika.
Il est composé d'un mosaïque unique de intermédiaire et de la forêt de montagne (avec une végétation afro-alpine limitée à sa partie supérieur) entrecoupées de prairies montagnardes. La région a toujours attiré beaucoup d'attention de la communauté de la conservation. Les études biologiques qui ont été menées dans les années 1990 ont confirmé la valeur biologique exceptionnelle du massif, qui abrite 583 des espèces d'oiseaux dont 30 sont endémiques au Rift Albertin, 72 espèces de mammifères endémiques (4), 35 espèces de reptiles (5endemic ), 23 espèces de amphibans (16 endémiques).

Outre la vaste gamme d'espèces endémiques au Rift Albertin (qui sont des espèces cibles pour l'écorégion).
Itombwe détient également d'importantes populations de gorilles des plaines orientales beringei, chimpanzés de l'Est.
