Feminism 2.0

Web 2.0 and Radical Feminism… Could it ever be possible to confuse the two? to mistake one for the other? or to just blend them together into one meaning, integrating and exchanging the terms synonymously? A noun, (the definition reads), founded on the principles of collaboration, sharing, collectivity, integration, generosity and trust. Ideal for fostering the empowerment of women and the (r)evolutionary ideals of respect, equity and efficacy for all…

How exciting that such is the reality of the new media tools available through Web 2.0! By its very nature, the creative, engaging and participatory characteristics of these resources are inherently feminist. They not only provide an accessible and effective means for women to effect social transformation of causes important to them, but through their very usage and involvement with this prolific medium, men and youth are being taught theses values as well.

For women users of web-technology, the significance of this is multiplied. By becoming active participants and creators of web-based information and action, they are recognized and honored in new ways when their unique experiences, wisdom and perspectives are reflected in their individual voices. Finally, there exists a social justice forum where all persons can be heard, all cries can be intoned and all calls can be articulated, regardless of sex, class, race, education or other previously divisive factor.

Additionally, the generous quality of Web 2.0 allows for the expansion of personal capacity and power. The fluid and free offering and exchange of ideas, solutions, actions and support presents each one of us with the opportunity to grow and act together with greater collective strength and intelligence than ever before.

It is this promise that so draws me, a feminist and activist devoted to authentic face-to-face connection and partnership, into the province of on-line activism. In no other way can I hear as many wise women, can I share in the struggles and successes of so many sisters, near and far, and can I be a member of a matrilineal community that is instrumental in today’s movement building… changing the way all of us, women and men alike, think and live our lives.
