Digital Literacy for Employability and Entrepreneurship Project - Girls in Rural Kenya

What I'm Leading

A project aimed at developing the employability and entrepreneurship skills of young people, 70% girls in rural Kenya (15-19years) beginning with Digital Skills that help unlock untapped economic opportunties. 

About 80% of Kenya’s entire 49million population is below 35years. According to a 2016 report by the Aga Khan University, over 55% of these are unemployed, 62% of them being women, and 68% being women in rural areas. Youth aged 18-25 years were twice as likely to be unemployed compared to their counterparts aged 26-35years. Further, according to 2011 World Bank and Kenya Government’s reports, 800,000 job-seekers enter the job market each year, yet only 50, 000 (6.25%) find employment in the private sector. About 48% of Kenya’s youth would like to go into business, while 26% prefer formal employment in careers like Engineering, Law, Medicine etc. Only 11% of youth would like to become farmers, a situation that intensifies demand for off-market jobs.

DLEEP's After-school program targets mainly girls (15-19yrs) in rural areas of Kenya. We aim to reduce youth unemployment by equipping them with high-on-demand technical skills to enable them to either secure employment or to start self-employment ventures to offer services and products whose demand has been unmet due to a skills-gap in STEM and a growing Digital Gender Divide. Our focus is Digital & Agri-business skills, in order to leverage on the basic Computer studies & Agriculture courses and resources offered in high-schools.

Digital centers will be established where the program runs to offer digital services like; Online jobs in Data entry and Content writing, Graphic Designing & Printing, Website Designing, Computer Browsing, Digital & Internet Literacy Training, Social Media Literacy, Resume writing, Online courses/studies, Digital Libraries (Books & Revision materials), and Links to resourceful online platforms, education & job opportunities. These centers will be run by young people under the supervision of administrators.

During holidays,  graduates of the after-school program will be attached in TAP Africa’s Digital Centers, some organizations, and farms. They will also be equipped with life skills, resume writing & interview skills, customer service skills, marketing skills, financial literacy skills, and business management skills.

In Phase 2; Young people involved in agriculture will be encouraged & supported to start innovative farming ventures in school and at home, and value addition to their products before selling.

Digital Skills;

The In-school and After-school digital skills program outline will include;

  1. Basic IT Skills Training (In-school)
  2. Advanced Tech Skills Training (After-school)
  3. Non-tech employability and entrepreneurship skills (After-school)

Agri-business skills;

The after-school agri-business program outline will include;

  1. Climate-smart agriculture
  2. Innovative farming methods
  3. Agricultural Value- Addition

Mentorship; Mentors will be assigned to various groups of young people to guide them through the various stages of skills development, attachment & organizational placements, venture establishment, and marketing.

Workshops; Young people will benefit from holiday workshops to improve their life-skills, challenge them to improve their solution creativity & innovation, meet role models/experts/entrepreneurs in these fields.

Organizational Placements; Young People with sufficient job skills & experience will be supported to secure organizational placements. During the first 6 weeks, the young people will render their services for free, we shall support them. Later, organizations seeking to hire their services beyond that period will be required to pay them a stipend.

Sustainability:The TAP Africa Digital centers shall raise revenues to be used for center maintenance, administrator’s salaries, organizing workshops, and establishment of new centers. TAP Africa will also raise funds through the agribusiness activities by partnering with grocery stores in farmers’ markets & restaurants to enable young people supply their agricultural products. The businesses will remit 15% of revenues to TAP Africa; which will go towards organizing agricultural trips & workshops, paying facilitators’ allowances, purchasing seeds & other necessities for practical sessions.

Target group: Young people, 70% girls from Rural Kenya. Direct Beneficiaries: 500 Peer-training: 2500 Indirect Beneficiaries (People that the direct beneficiaries interact with, inspire and influence, as well as teach some of the newly acquired skills) First 2 years; 2000 youth & adults

About Me

I founded TAP Africa, a youth-focused initiative that aims to help raise a generation of young people, who are aware of the challenges affecting their communities and are eager to create innovative, sustainable solutions. Through our work, we engage young people in learning and addressing pressing social challenges in Kenya, particularly those directly affecting the them, like Unemployment and Gender based Violence, thereby helping raise a generation of proactive young people to lead positive change in their communities.
