Happy International Mother Earth Day!

Greengirl (Olanike) with the Green Queen (late Wangari Maathai) at the 1st African Women and Water Conference held at Karen Nbi, Kenya.
Women are the closest to nature and they are the best poised to address the environmental problems that humanity is grappling with.

As I write, it's 1:04 a.m. in Nigeria. In the stillness and calmness of the silence around me, I listened to and could distinctly pick out three thrilling sounds from out in the dark:chirping crickets, barking neighborhood dogs and squeaks of bats. Each sound continuosly reminded me of the prowess of nature- 'Mother Earth'.

I have been counting down to 22 April 2015. Yes, today is 'Earth Day' and the theme for this year is “It’s Our Turn to Lead.” For so many reasons I am sure many will appreciate, why I prefer to go with 'International Mother Earth Day'.

The questions on my mind that are begging for answers include :

  1. How many people the world over actually realise and appreciate how so motherly the Earth is to humanity?
  2. Who on earth has not benefitted from the motherly nature of the Earth?
  3. Why does humanity choose to ignore Mother Earth's needs even when we see and know what to do to make her happy?
  4. How much longer can Mother Earth bear the excesses of the very children she longs to sustain?
  5. We know we cannot do without Mother Earth's nurturing, so why can't we nurture her in return?
  6. How many people would take a stand for Mother Earth today?

We have individual and collective responsibilities towards Mother Earth. Each one of us can start to take action and then motivate others to follow suit. The positive steps we take and every seemingly little gifts we offer 'Mother Earth' all adds up! Let's start now!!!

As a mark of honor for today's Earth Day celebration, I share with you, a profile of myself-http://www.gwln.org/profiles-of-impact/olanike-olugboji/?rq=earth%20day, which was pieced together by the Global Women's Leadership Network (GWLN) team. I hope it inspires you to commit to the good cause of environmental sustainability. Let's listen to, stir and lead the much needed change Mother Earth craves for. Happy 'International Mother Earth Day'!

You are welcome to inspire our group with stories, pictures, and or video(s) of how you or others in your community are contributing to or leading change in the drive for environmental sustainability.

Dear Olanike, You are indeed inspirational! Thank you for leading us all in such a prayerful stance of thankgiving and celebration and commitment.

Outside my rooming space, the earth simmers at noon, the heat is almost unbearable in the midst of an El Nino phenomenon that has been given us rainless skies for weeks now. I connect with you and other earthlings at this moment, committing to act to stave off climate change everyday of my meager life. I connnect to the EarthMother, nurturing awareness of our connectedness to one another and to this planet and Universe we inhabit. In raising our fists and pens in resistance to the forces that divide and destroy our sources of strength and energy and passion for Life.

Dearest libudsuroy,

You've always inspired me too with your creative writing and love for nature. I feel what you feel and share your concerns about the weather situation in your part of the world, as the experience over here is not any different- the heat is not so friendly, everywhere is dry and dusty and there's just no sign that we are already in the rainly season.

I know too well that you have been doing your own bit to ensure that climate change is reversed for good. I am very much convinced that you would stay true to your committment, as always. Thank you so much for being such a strong and firm advocate of climate justice and sustainability.

Together we will continue to constructively resist "the forces that divide and destroy our sources of strength and energy and passion for life". I appreciate you my sweet sister for being such a motivational ally.

Much love and hugs, Olanike

Dear Greengirl,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on Earth Day. It is so important that everyone takes a moment to stop and think and appreciate all that Mother Earth provides to them. I loved hearing about the sounds that you heard and that when everything is still and calm we can sit and take time to reflect on all that nature has to offer.

I don’t have any answers to your questions but think that they are great questions to ask and continue to ask. It is important that we stand together and recognize Earth Day in order to bring awareness to issues that are occurring and to ensure that people will continue to appreciate all that earth provides.

One thing that I have been involved with that helps drive environmental sustainability is helping to plant trees throughout my community and help during beach clean up events, picking up trash, and continue to use my resources wisely and try to force myself to live as sustainable as possible. Thank you for sharing your profile and your amazing words of encouragement.

Sincerely,  Alyssa Rust

Dearest Alyssa,

I am so excited to hear from you, and cannot thank you enough for your very encouraging feed back. Well, I want you to know that in your own  way, you helped provide some answers to the questions I raised.

Speaking of awareness creation for example, I believe that when more people gain and or have better insight about the different ecological challenges that are occuring, and how that most of them are man-made and preventable I know too well people will begin to embrace options that will save our Earth.

In your own very impressive and inspiring way also, you have  been nurturing Mother Earth; and I know too well that your actions would have stirred and continue to stir others to take action. I feel really blessed to connect with you, and I trust that we will continue in our efforts as we forge ahead.

Together we can and will make our world a better living space for ALL!

Very warm regads,

Olanike
