Women and the Media, Vision to Action towards the achievement of the SDGs

Every woman in the developing world struggles to feed and educate their children. These children when empowered with opportunities they have a chance to work their way out of poverty and transform their lives. Women are real change agents for they can feed their families, raise their kids, employ or impact sustainable transformation as well as create a new story for herself, her children and her community. A woman can change the world when she is given the opportunity.

On 11 February was celebrated internationally the Second International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The theme for this year is “Gender, Science and Sustainable Development: The Impact of the Media, from Vision to Action”. This day is an opportunity for all to take a stand with women and girls to advocate for the important of the Media in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Following the continuous changes in Cameroon and in the North West and South West Regions in particular, little attention has be given to women especially in the misuse of the media and its effect to the educational system and to the socio-cultural development.

As a role to the UN 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development, which clearly highlights gender equality and empowerment, and as such need to give women a chance to guide their children who through the media are seriously losing the their civil and moral values. With the various messages, videos and pictures shared through the various social media, where girls and women shoulder the heaviest burdens.

It will be good to initiate with women or by women meaningful progress on their rights and dignity, by nurturing creativity and innovation and giving them the chance to guide their children and bring them up in the right way to follow the national laws and norms.

Today where most women and girls are living in fear, with the numerous National and International activity days, it will be good to look for an approach for women to participate in uplifting the fear and respect of the false social media governing and guide and teach their children in the respect of their civil duties.

With this in mind we are ready to develop ideas and resources working together with women groups, associations, national and international organisations working toward women empowerment, gender equality, education, good governance, human rights and the others advocating for the judicious use of the social media
