Uganda Women's Anthem

Posted March 1, 2012 from Uganda

As the women in Uganda join the rest of the world in commemorating the International women's Day this year, I want to re-echo the words of the women's Anthem of Uganda. I particularly want to remember Prof. Rose Mbowa (RIP) for her brilliance in composing this anthem.

Chorus

Mothers, Daughters All women everywhere Stand up and embrace Your roles today

  1. We are proud mothers of our nation The backbone without which it can never stand We wake up, wake up We wake up at the crack of dawn And feed the nation with our brains With love and joy we care for our baby

Chorus

Mothers, Daughters All women everywhere Stand up and embrace Your roles today

2.Step by step with tender care We nurse her we mould her at home and in school Leading, leading Spearheading her identity production and development In government and profession Name it women are there

Chorus

Mothers, Daughters All women everywhere Stand up and embrace Your roles today

  1. We call on you women of Uganda Wake up if you have not yet embraced your role Wake up, wake up Beside our men let’s play our role In solving our nationals’ needs In every walk of life to develop Uganda

Chorus

Mothers, Daughters All women everywhere Stand up and embrace Your roles today

Composed by Prof. Rose Mbowa (RIP)

Dear Ikirimat,

Welcome to the party sister, you put Uganda on the map! Thanks for brining the music, and sharing the powerful Women's Anthem of Uganda. I would love to hear the melody sometime. I love the lyrics written by the late Prof. Rose Mbowa and hold these truths close to my heart. Will you be singing this song on March 8? I wonder if other countries have women's anthems?

xoxo Jade

Thanks Jade for your comments. Every year Uganda celebrates IWD where the women's anthem is sung after the national anthem. Celebrations are taken to a selected district every year with a selected theme. I intend to write about what a typical IWD in Uganda looks like referring to this year. Just watch this space.

I will like to adapt the Anthem for the women in Nigeria. More grease to your elbow

Happy Women's Day

You are right sister, an anthem for Nigeria women will remind them of the goal , keep them focussed and encouraged to work with others towards achieving gender equality.

Please go ahead

My dear Ikirimat, Nice one you got here. You have driven me to the lyrics of Cameroon Women's Anthem too. Jade Cameroon actually has an Anthem for women. We sing this every 8th March after the Women's Anthem.

Cameroon Women's Anthem

ALL ACROSS THE NATIONS ALL AROUND THE WORLD WOMEN ARE LONGING TO BE FREE-E-E-E NO LONGER IN THE SHADOWS, FORCED TO STAY BEHIND BUT SIDE BY SIDE IN TRUE EQUALITY-Y-Y-Y

CHORUS:

SO SING A SONG FOR WOMEN EVERYWHERE LET IT RING AROUND THE WORLD AND NEVER NEVER CEASE SO SING A SONG, FOR WOMEN EVERYWHERE EQUALITY - DEVELOPMENT - AND PEACE.

I'm so happy to read these words, I just wish I could hear them sung :) Since we don't have a women's anthem, I would love to read Uganda and Cameroon's anthems to the women who gather in my city of Jacksonville, Florida, US, to celebrate International Women's Day. We will be joining women on bridges to symbolize that we can build bridges of peace and hope for the future (this global campaign is led by Women for Women International; joinmeonthebridge.org) Thank you Ikirimat!
