Irene Nguti
I very passionate about hand made fabrics. and hand finished clothes from my cultural heritage in Bamenda, Cameroon.

“I was born and raised in Mankon, Bamenda in the North West Region of the Republic of Cameroon. I grew up with a lot of admiration for culture and nature. The rich and colorful displays of my culture, and the way these blended with nature and the beautiful African landscape marveled and inspired me endlessly from childhood. As such, I developed an interest in hand crafts and particularly crafts involving the use of traditional hand-spawn organic cottons, local materials or custom made fabrics. My earliest attempts at designing date back to my infancy thanks to my mother’s generous and ever-available collection of traditional African fabric; and now, after years of experimenting with a variety of traditional African materials, we have our own “iN” fashion brand of excellent quality to meet global demands”. My vision: To add my voice in promoting African culture through my traditionally inspired designs My mission: To encourage the production, development and promotion of our local Cameroonian traditional fabrics and designs.

Hello Irene,

How are you? Welcome to World Pulse:-) Oh, wow! So exciting. I love the sound of your mission, dear. Do you have access to banana farms or fabric? I'm hoping to eventually collaborate with Awah, who is also a WP sister, to create a safe haven there for women who have been trafficked or are IDPS, but it's difficult at best, with the situation going on there. I am interested in hearing more about what you are creating, where you get your inspiration, and how the fabric gets developed:-) Do you have a website and/or social media page(s) to follow?

I'm looking forward to hearing more about it, and also seeing more photos, too:-)

Hope you're safe and well.

Hello Jill,
The brand “IRENE NGUTI (iN)” is the creation and a brand named after Cameroonian born clothing designer, Irene Nguti. It is inspired from the word “Embõõ” in the native Mankon dialect of the North West Region of the Republic of Cameroon which means “hands” because iN is highly reflective of the designer’s overwhelming love and preference for hand-crafted materials. If there is one exceptional attribute to iN, it is the fact that most, if not all designs are particularly hand-crafted in one way or another. This has been the main inspiration behind the name and remains the core-quality trait of the brand. From hand-woven, hand-painted and hand-dyed fabrics to hand stitched, marked and hand-sewn designs, IN is carving its own unique path to the fashion stage of Cameroon, Africa and the world. All of this, is in a bid to give our brand lovers a personal touch in all our products.
iN Designs are conceived to showcase that traditional afro-centric vibe as they feature a variety of African hand-woven fabrics like Atoghu from Cameroon, Batic from Ghana, Endigo from Burkina Faso, and Mali, vlisco and wodin as well as uniquely colored tie-and-dye cotton fabrics. Apart from clothing apparel for men, women and children, iN equally offers a wide range of customizable designs for home décor such as pillow-covers, table covers, window blinds, etc.
