The Effects of Uncensored Media Intake

I don’t know about you but I tend to copy women I see who seem to have the kind of life that looks attractive. I pick up mentors, fictional and real from information that reaches me. I am attracted to women who have it together, women who are big, women whose stories are broadcasted and played up.

I like the way Carrie Bradshaw (in Sex And The City) dresses, I love Olivia Pope’s confidence (Scandal), I was pulled to something in Annalise Keating (How To Get Away With Murder) and Mary Jane Paul in Being Mary-Jane seemed perfect. The disadvantage is that these women have lifestyles which are not entirely commendable and constantly paying attention to them may cause us to think it is okay to live like that.

In real life, there are consequences, real ones. You can't expect to be with Guy A today and Guy B tomorrow and escape the loss of reputation, possibility of unwanted pregnancy and STI's, drop in self-esteem, just to name a few consequences, that come with such behaviour.

The part that concerns me the most is the fact that young girls just like I was, see the glamour portrayed by these ladies on the big screen and feel it is okay to live like that. What these media contents do not show is the fact that people who live like that do not end up with a happy ever after!

I remember my big sister asking me this question when I was caught up in the bubble "Do you think this is Sex And the city? No, this is real life so you better stop behaving this way!" Thank God I got past that phase and I have realized that the information we take goes a long way in affecting our behaviours. I blog regularly about this topic and more on my website Oh May Zen!

On the other end of the spectrum is a beautiful movie I watched called War Room. In it I saw a heroine so it fit the bill of my fictional cravings. I want to point out are the positive things I copied fromthis movie after I finished watching it.

  • Just like the heroine, I got a spiritual mentor for myself who helps me along my spiritual journey.
  • I got my own prayer closet. I copied how she started off (the heroine) not being perfect as a praying person but grew into a prayer warrior.
  • I learnt to confront the devil in situations in my life and use words of faith against him.

I love movies. I wish there were more wholesome media content out there because the effects of the good choices I made as a result of copying that movie are still havingeffects in my life. I believe that more wholesome media content being consumed by the public will help us all to make better choices.

Hi Iya. Thanks for sharing your story about the impact the media has on all of our lives, especially girls and women. And, yes, I think most of inadvertently find ourselves mirroring characters we see in movies, tv shows, and even print media as well. I also agree that we need more wholesome media influences to use as healthy role models. There are some, but like you said, some of their character flaws are had to not take on as well, when they are portrayed glamorously. You could post this story under the WP call for "Media in Our Lives," if you are interested: https://www.worldpulse.com/en/voices-rising/story-awards/79283.

Thanks Jill, we all tend to copy what the media promotes as ideal in terms of weights, looks, behaviour, etc! If this cycle could end we will be able to make better choices based on better media output.

I tried posting in the topic call "Media in our lives" but the call was closed so I shared under ANY TOPIC CALL. Hope you are well!

So true. Media helps a lot as women and young ladies are influenced by other personalities that we see on the media.let's keep emulating but not in all aspect.

yes Giselle. I think we should emulate that which is good in the media. More reason why there should be more wholesome media broadcasted.

Hi Iyamail, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the movies you watched. I watched that movie too "War Room" and good to know that you were able to take with you positive points.  With so many movies produced, we really need to filter what we feed our minds because subconsciously this effects the way we think (in my opinion).
