Bam bam bam
The drums roll
“It’s a baby girl!, exclaims the father,
“May our ancestors be praised for this wonderful gift” replies the uncle,
“Go tell my neighbours, my relations and well-wishers” shouts the grandmother
Let the drums roll all day long….
Bam bam bam
Lets celebrate the arrival of our child,
Our daughter,
Our princess,
Our mother,
Welcome to the world!!
This is my vision for my community and the world at large, especially nations that are yet to accept the girl child, the woman as human beings with equal opportunities. A world where the arrival of a female child is equally celebrated like that of the male child. It is my personal vision that this will come to pass in my life time.
My community is so poor because the woman has not been given her rightful place in the society. She has no right to even her farm produce, despite the fact that they toiled the land. Her husband puts all produce in his barn and dishes out as the need arises. Women in my community are so dehumanized into believing that there is no other life outside marriage. Their lives is tied to the well being of their families at the expense of theirs. They are simply ‘baby factories’ and care givers. I remember with nostalgia when I tried talking to women on their reproductive rights. They ‘ gladly’ told me to discuss their reproductive rights with their spouses!
As a correspondent, I will be their voice…their amplified voices, reaching the nooks and crannies of the globe .Armed with the technical know how through the training I will receive as a correspondent ,I will get to learn from other communities ,their challenges their solutions.Telling my story, that of my community, will draw attention of international community to facilitate the development of my community.We have started somewhere ,but, we can do more with sharing of ideas with friends and fellow correspondents.
I would want to appreciate Linda Ando, a fellow applicant for linking me up with her sister who has an NGO that helps rural dwellers to have sustainable development. This is just a tip of the iceberg.as an applicant , more of this networking will be achieved as a correspondent .If successful ,I would like to share my project on fair trade for the rural women farmers among others.
Together the future of my community is brighter.
