We retreated and huddled with ourselves in isolation, in solitude, with our own, and always with our like minded people. I had no desire to share with anyone other than a person who "gets it" with a guarantee. No time or desire to teach, debate or dispute. The concept and the institution of democracy was being threatened.
This election brought out a fear amongst the masses. We feared the continuation of ignorance, amplified racism, civil unrest and division, economic failure and a raging pandemic. There has been a division of families and friends that created a "walk on eggs", and politically correct conversations, just so you can come out with your family and circle of friends intact. The concept of democracy hung in the balance. For the first time in my adult life, my American life, I pondered what other country could I live in? Our democracy was being threatened. We feared four more years of the opposing party relishing in and repeating the awful histories that made America famous, but not great.
Today is a prideful and moving moment. Today we elected a new president. We have hope and a man who is steeped in the ways of politics, government and history who represents all Americans. He's not a corrupt businessman, reality show star and narcissist that doesn't read, or play well with the other kids. We have a vice president that is a Black Asian woman who is also steeped in politics, decision making and leadership. Not a "yes man" who is insignificant at best. We now have leaders that know the ropes, the terrain and are educated and experienced.
We still have 73 days left with the current administration. Will there be retribution? A man who does not lose well has lost. The Electoral College votes were an unquestionable contrast. This current sitting president is too self conceited to concede. We have a stimulus program that is pending. For many Americans it will make a huge economic difference in their challenged lives. Will he punish us by not passing the bill? We have no healthcare plan, no Coronavirus Pandemic plan. We only have a knee jerk reaction that is not sustainable.
We have hope. With hope there is possibility. We can look forward to our neighbors being our friends again, locally and globally. We have been, for the past four years, the Divided States of America. We look forward to being the United States of America.
The simple miracle that happened, while we cheered with relief and hope of our democracy being strong and surviving a worsening tyranny, is that in Los Angeles it poured rain! We have a new president and it rained. God is great!
