Inspiration to speak out against the sexist dress code

World Pulse has helped me create an impact in a small but certainly significant way. At my school, you'll always hear how a girl has been dress coded for wearing a skirt just an inch too short, and therefore punished by being publicly embarrassed by male staff and sent to the office to either change or be sent home. I have never met another student that isn't upset with the dress code enforced at our school, but no one ever did anything. I've always been angered seeing female classmates punished simply based off of the clothing she wears. It's clear that dress codes discriminate against female students, especially women of color and girls with body types that don't fit today's beauty standards. This greatly bothers me, but I've never seen anyone do anything about it within our school. World Pulse shares lots of inspiring stories about women speaking out against issues that have often gone without acknowledgement, and I thought, if these women can do this, then so can I. So, recently I began constructing a petition asking the school board to change our dress code. All of my classmates who I have told have been extremely supportive and willing to make change like this happen. I saw the way their eyes lit up when they heard someone was standing up to the misogynistic behaviours our school has exhibited for far too long, and while there is certainly a long way to go with this petition, I can only hope that I will inspire my female counterparts to do what World Pulse has inspired me to do.
