Web 2.0 our Voice.

Quicker than expected the divided world is fast becoming a Pangaea again, where globalization has impacted how we as a people now live our life in today’s society. Her voice, my voice, needs a space in the world to be heard a space that can capture and reflect her voice - my voice, her realities - my realities, her concerns - my concerns and most of all her beliefs - my beliefs. And where else in this modernized world but, through Web 2.0 technologies.

I believe that Web 2.0 aids and has aided and is aiding in women empowerment by: 1) being an unbiased platform 2) a safe space 3) an opportunity space for online entrepreneurial activity. Historically women and their issues have been placed on the back burner and Web 2.0 has brought to the global women’s empowerment movement a tool that is non-human , therefore unbiased, which them opens the opportunity for women to safely express their thoughts, stories, or current situation as each gender brings a different perspective to the table.

Despite the saying, ‘freedom of speech is a right’, one must not underestimate the vulnerability of women in volatile areas who need to share and seek help for her issues that she may be unable to say in the face of others directly without persecution. Yes, Web 2.0 may not be a 100 % safe due to hackers and other harmful technologies such as viruses or worm, but anonymity aids in more women speaking out, as women are private begins and most often prefer a private platforms

It is a known fact that that in order to close the joblessness gap between girls and their male counterparts, the web 2.0 can be a tool for women to explore and be used for entrepreneurial opportunities that will bridge the gap that would yield an increase in GDP of up to 1.2 per cent in a single year.

Personally, the web 2.0 has enabled me to become empowered by becoming educated on various issues across my country and by extension the world. Social media such as Facebook, twitter and Google search engine has kept me up to date with various organizations that represent various social group or lobby groups that deals with important issues, such as child marriage, millennium developmental goals, poverty and other issues. It has also provided me with networking opportunities and used as source of entertainment.
