1995 Beijing marked the beginning of a journey full of uncertainty for women around the globe. Expectations flared, but were met with the inability to promote change in the mindset and attitudes as well as to dismantle the traditional structures that could promote and give women a voice. 16 years down the line, progression has led women to realize the power of civil society through the connection and reflection of the needs and hopes of ordinary women. Web 2.0 is a virtual treasure trove for women which give them the platform to voice their concerns. Even though it might not have been Zackerberg’s intention, Facebook along with other social networks as well as Information Communication Technologies (ICT) help interconnections, networking and mobilization of women and assists in their empowerment. ICT addresses the agenda of women empowerment in a holistic manner. By bridging the digital divide Web 2.0 allows you to connect and transform through collaboration. Pulsewire has managed to bring together a diverse group of women from all over the world to be voices that switch perceptions and change the way the world views women. By raising awareness in a world that thinks less of women, it gives us the opportunity to speak out and amplify thoughts by blogging and posting testimonials. Since it is a treasure trove of information it can be accessed by thousands of people around the world. Web 2.0 has enabled issues such as girl child education in Zimbabwe to be brought to the world’s attention. Today organizations such as CAMFED have come to assist and it is all because there was a tool in 2002 that enabled voices of women to reach all corners of the world. It brings both joy and excitement to me whenever I see publications that touch on women’s rights, development and promotion of their political endeavors. Mainly because each time I think that through that media for every person that takes time to read or chat with an activist there is a domino effect. With such a large platform, it allows you to create connections through networking. In Zimbabwe, the period of 2006 and 2008 unemployment had increased exponentially and may survived on “connections’” which proves that they are an important part of human development. Web 2.0 facilitates networking interaction online for women and allows us to build a community that acts as your backbone each time you challenge the world order. Once the backbone is formed the community is then able to advocate for women in global issues such as women in politics and power. It also allows young vibrant women to publish their projects on community development that help solve global problems each year as well as bringing innovation to this world. I believe that women are indeed an untapped source of innovation and solutions and through them leaders are born who promote our voice, strength, collaboration and accelerate the exchange of working models of women empowerment. Women have been known to provide lasting solutions to global problems.
