Who cares about the poor artisans

Am not an artisan but a consumer of their beautiful works of their hardworking hands. Am also a rights advocate by choice and passion and believe in dignity at whatever level of the societal strata. Kenyan women comprise most of the beads and other handmade jewelery artists and make some of the most beautiful pieces. Sadly enough, the real artists are never seen by the end consumer-the person you meet is a trader with a high price tag for the piece. Where then is the artist in all this-back in a remote village making more then sell to the city trader for a song. This trader is the one exporting the piece and selling to high end consumers. Even at the "Fair Trade " beads workshop I doubt if all is that fair. Someone needs to monitor the chain of distribution from the first bead to the end.
