Sex Brothel: Can We Break Unhealthy Cycles and Offer Cycles of Hope?

Nigerian Women Voices Matters, Join The Movement!

I had an opportunity to visit several brothels,  where women were selling their bodies for less than $2usd.

The lady in the photo had been deceived by her aunt who promised her and her parents a better life and a job when she was just a teenage girl. Instead, the aunt exploited her niece into a life of prostitution.

The young lady had been there so long that she didn't even know her age. She later confess during our visit that she had tested positive for  HIV.

The aunt allowed me to speak with her and several other women, and also permitted me to take a look at some of the rooms where the girls slept and performed sex acts for money.

These rooms were about 7ftx8ft maybe smaller In size. There were 3 single-size beds in each room, With a dirty bed sheet hanging as a partition between each bed.

I spoke with some of the older prostitutes, and they informed me that they wanted to leave, but were indebted to the owner and could not leave until the debt was paid.

When I asked how, they started,  to live and carry out these sex acts in the brothel had an N15k  per month fee,  which is about $35usd per month.

Believe it or not, some Nigerians that work legal jobs don't make this amount in a month as their take-home salary.

As I continue speaking to the women,  The older ladies stated, that due to their age they didn't make enough money  to pay the monthly living and bed rental agreement,  Because most of the men desired the younger women. Which caused them not to earn enough money to pay the brothel owner.

I joined forces with Dr.P,  and offered some of the young ladies a job.  However, it was a fight getting them to trust us and leave the brothel.

The aunt, well in her late 60s early 70s,  and was now running the very same brothel,  for the very same family,  she once prostituted in herself.  And the same brothel that her own daughter also prostituted in and later contracted HIV,  and died from the virus.  The aunt was now raising her deceased daughter, two daughters, in the brothel.
