Legal Rights Awareness for university students

Access to justice remains a preserve of the few because it is expensive and many people cannot afford.Young people are very vulnerable when it comes to access to justice within the courts.Against this backdrop and as part of Addressing Shrinking Civic Space, Haki Nawiri organised a session on legal rights awareness in collaboration with Legal Resources Foundation. The objective was to empower students on the justice process through the courts, rights of an accused person, legal framework in relation to access to justice including the Constitution, Criminal Procedure Code(CPC) and how to report cases when one's rights has been violated. The forum further discussed the importance of students to be part of Court users Committee (CUCs) in their localities , such that they familiarise with the justice process but also when a student is arrested , they can follow up the case or identify lawyers and paralegals to follow up the case. The forum was held on 22 January 2022.
