ICT a CURSE or BLESSING?

I remember it vividly, it was  somewhere in the 90s, when ICT was been introduced into our educational syllables. I was then in my first year in our current Senior High Sch(shs). It was a compulsory subject in addition to our elective subjects, meaning it was not optional. Due to lack of equipment like  computers and its accessories the classes take turns.

Our administration block has come out with a very long timetable as to when and how these terms applied. Pasted on our notice board. It was then the duty of every class prefect to study the schedules and communicate with its class members when it was ICT lesson.

Haha, you are wondering why am jiggling I guess. Every time our class enter for ICT lessons, we quarry over the used of computers. The computer laboratory was equipped with only ten(10) working computer as against 45 students in a class. Technically, it was 4. 5 students per a computer. This 4 is to 5 students with a computer turns thus became impossible because we only had an hour and a half for ICT lesson.

So while the brave one's got the opportunity to use the computer practical, the less brave are left to study only the manual. Its was a force to reckon with this ICT lesson. Hopefully, we all did that and finally graduated less experience in ICT, ha. Personally, my ICT development got a little rooted when I got enrolled as a student in Egmont højskole far away in Denmark. I did only two semesters, but by the time I graduated I was very Hopeful in ICT. There, I become a madam of ICT. I could then design a leaflet, website, etc. I could maneuver myself around word, excel and all related programs. At Egmont Højskole ICT lesson became pleasurable. The computer laboratory was a computer to a student and sometimes two computers to a student he he.

Finally, I graduated and returned home back to Ghana. Week one no ICT lessons, week two no practices, one month, two, and six months no ICT practices. At this point all my ICT skills starts leaving me. When I got a computer later down memory lane I try to practice, but unfortunately a lots left me. I can still do something's anyway like using of the word software etc.  However, my website designing skills has completely left me.

When its comes to ICT, I am so proud how far I have come along. Its ICT that has helped me come to know world pulse, with ICT I can connect with friends and love  ones through social media's. I also market myself, products and organization on social media's. ICT has made our world today a global village. At the comfort of your home you can pay bills, access your account in the bank, transfer money to love ones and friend, organise trips, book flight tickets etc. All these is thanks to ICT.

Nevertheless, my heart is saddened when I reflect on the bad aspect of it. Today, due to excessive knowledge about ICT we got hackers. Who can sit behind the computer and defraud innocent victims of their monies. The other vice's of ICT is the pornographic aspect of it. Now, school children are at risk all the time for the fear their classmates showing them such images and videos :-(.

Then again the misused of the social media's by both employers and employees. While employers used it to check the records of their innocent future employees. Employees also waste unnecessary time spend here, leading to low productivity at work. What a shame!

My question now is, Is ICT a curse or a blessing? Let's debate around this question my dear sisters.

Thanks

Hi Lizzy,

How are you doing? Thanks for sharing your interesting post. How did you come to be enrolled in an ICT program in Denmark? That must have been really cool. What an opportunity.

Oh, I think it's both a blessing and a curse, but mostly a blessing. I definitely wouldn't be where I am today without it. I can't imagine designing without a computer, or not engaging with my sisters...

Hope you're doing well, and that you're biz is doing very well!?

Hi Sis Salifu :)

To answer... a blessing, it gives information, hears other voices.... A curse, made people depress, vain and taking out your quality time from yourself and family....

Thanks for sharing your thoughts

Hello, Sister Salifu,

Wow, Denmark! What a great opportunity to study ICT there! I enjoyed reading your ICT journey. There are ups and downs, advantages and disadvantages on everything, that includes ICT. Whether it is a blessing or a curse, it greatly depends on the user. If she uses it to improve herself and share encouragement to others like being connected on World Pulse, then it is truly a blessing. But is she use it to spread viruses or fake news, then it becomes a curse. Thanks for posting that thought-provoking question, dear sister! It was fun.

Aahaa finally I got a very good debated on this topic. The rest never convinced me with what they debated about, for me you hit the nail on the head.
The answer depends on the user. We only can allow ICT to influence us either good or for bad. Thumb up.

How are you doing? My regards from Ghana and hope you are enjoying your new city? Its not easy sometimes, a lots of changes including friends but I trust you will pick things up quickly :-).
Thanks for your encouraging comment.

Hello, Sister Salifu,

Oh, wow! I’m happy you’re satisfied with my answer. :)

We are still in an adjustment period. We’re starting all over again, but I’m glad to meet new acquaintances. I joined an Autism Family Camp for parents and kids on May 1st. I will be joining a #ConnectedWomen gathering on the 22nd. All is well. Thank you for asking. I appreciate it!:)

What about the #connectedwomen is it a women organization? Or also about child disability organization?
