Posted February 21, 2020 from Kenya

International Mother Language Day is celebrated every year on 21st February. The main purpose of celebrating this day is to promote the awareness of language and cultural diversity all across the world. It was first announced by UNESCO on November 17, 1999. Since then it is being celebrated every year.

Facilitating our book clubs where we also advocate for mother language.

In commemoration of this day, celebrate your mother language by commenting "Have a good day" in it (Mother's tongue) let someone learn your language

Hi name sake,I never knew there was a day like this but its beautiful to know and I'll work towards it next year. How did it go with the celebration for you? Ideas could help. Great job there thanks for helping the children know the importance of their mother tongue its a beauty we enjoy.

Hi Lizzy
Yes, now you know..we advocate for literacy and these are some of the important days in our calendar of events. Il will be sharing more with time. The celebration went on well, with pupils reading storybooks which are in the mother tongue. We have a selection of them donated to us in different languages. In our reading clubs which we established, we encourage pupils to know and practice their mother tongue. We mostly do storytelling and even write essays in the mother tongue to mention just a few activities. I hope you will be able to implement this in your country as well
