Grants and Fundraising Support
Lensational imagines a gender-equal world whereby women can express themselves freely, fulfill their aspirations, and be represented in a dignified way. In this context, we have found that photography and visual storytelling serves as a unique solution, as a tool to transcend the cultural and language barriers they face. There is also an emerging space for our women’s stories, with only 13% of global news stories focused on women, and 46% of those found to reinforce gender stereotypes. “If you can’t see it, you can’t be it” - the role of imagery has been proven to shape gender and cultural norms. Our approach places the power of changing public perceptions into the hands of the women themselves, empowering our students to craft their own narratives. Even though we have tested this approach for 7 years in 23 countries, we never had substantial funding and space to help us reflect on the learnings on what it takes to empower women and to transform gender norms.
After 7 years of organic development and having the organization set up in the UK, in January 2020, we made the decision to invest more resources in Kenya as one of our 3 regional hubs. We are now in the process of completing the NGO registration, and having an anchor supporter like Hivos will enable us to achieve sustainability. Our goal is to empower 100 girls and women, ensuring at least half of those women are financially sustainable through our follow up mentorships and economic opportunities, and rapidly scaling that to 100,000 women in 5 years’ time. This investment would go a long way into propelling us further in that direction, in addition to building a strategic partnership and growing our portfolio.
