Future Daughter
Future Daughter: a letter was written for our future daughter (1/1)

Dear future daughter,

During my younger year, me and my friend meet in a playground and play together with outdoor games like tumbang-preso (slipper and a tin can), step in step out, luksong tinik, Chinese garter (Chinese jump rope), jolen, syatong, tagu-taguan, patintero (this is similar to the game of tag), touch the color and some indoor games like luto-lutoan, jackstone, bahay-bahayan.   I don’t have that many toys before but we had clay pot we can use for luto-lutoan.

I climbed a tree to pick fruit. I even made a treehouse and play on the branches. The stories I keep hearing from my old Aunt and Uncle where “Si Pagong at si Matsing (The Turtle and the Monkey). Some song that I can still remember - “Ako ay may Lobo” (I have a balloon), “Tong Tong Pakitong” and “Magtanim ay di Biro”.

And my playmates run in the rice fields during summer or we go nearby seashore to pick up some shells, catches small fish and crabs. I learned to ride bikes after several falls with lots of practiced.

I would love to share and teach you about these games, stories, and songs. It’s simple but brings joy and connection. But more importantly, I want to share with you the values I have learned in my life and how I have changed the things that are more important in life today.

We want you to know that you have the right to be born, and be cared for as you grow up.

We will support you in your education so you can develop and discover your talents and skills.

We will let you enjoy your childhood, and protect you from any harm inside and outside the home.

We hope that you will grow up to be a responsible and free individual.

Remember this daughter….

Physically you are beautiful. Do not let others dictate you with how beautiful it should be. Being beautiful is how you accept who you are. If they look at you un-attractive, that is not your fault. Every person has different views about being beautiful. You are fearfully and wonderfully made.

You cannot please everybody. We have a different background, different culture, a different belief, different languages, different childhood, and different upbringing. Stand by what you know what is right. Don't think about what they would say.

Influence yourself with the right people. As you grow old, you will meet different people in life. Either bad or good, they will develop and mold your character. But whatever happens, don’t let yourself lose your respect.

Expect challenges and adversities. We are living in an imperfect world. There are no perfect lives. There is no easy life. Everything, you need to work at it. You need to learn and study. You need to improve. When you fall, stand up. Do not lose hope in life.

Be humble and be Wise. Whatever success you achieve in life, be humble. Wherever you go, be wise and not be fooled.

But most importantly is to have fear in God because the fear in God is the beginning of knowledge.

In unity and love, your Mom and Dad.

Dear MaeAnn,
What a great progression to go from simple and fun games in carefree times with your childhood friend, to your important messages about trusting ourselves despite what others may say, and advice on how to meet challenges that so often come our ways. I can picture you surrounded by young girls listening closely to your words.
