Women with disabilities and technology

We are the mothers with disabilities, found in the South-Kivu Province, city of Bukavu, Council of Ibanda, neighbourhood of Lycée Vertical.
We are members of the Association for Integrated Mentoring and Promotion of Women with Disabilities (AEPIFHA - Association pour l'Encadrement et la Promotion Integrale des Femmes vivant avec Handicapes). We work in areas of sewing bags and clothes, we make car dolls and embroidery.
Truly, technology is very important in every day life nowadays therefore there is a need to be knowledgable about it, especially for mothers with disability such as ourselves.
As disabled people, we have faced difficulties that have made our learning and use of internet a challenge.
Among the difficulties we can cite a few: distance from our homes to the center, money for transport, the small size of the computer room, insufficient chairs and computers and power cuts. We live far from the center, the distance is nearly 6km. Many times we can't go because of weather conditions such as rain and also because we have disabilities but we wish we could go to the center everyday. Sometimes the conductors on public vehicles refuse to let us in because of our condition and because of that, we fail to go.
Sometimes when we finally reach the center, we don't get access to computers because there aren't enough and the seats give us a back ache because they are uncomfortable. It is not everyday that there is electricity. All these are reasons why we can't fully participate in the use of internet.
We help other mothers and girls by sensitising them, encouraging them to learn how to use internet and we tell them about advantages of knowing how to use the internet.

Today, in our association, we have six members who are learning how to use computers and internet at the World Pulse Mama Shujaa Center. Thanks to the center, we have found means of communication with people everywhere in the world through technology. We send messages and we receive some. Some of us have very little knowledge, we would like to ask technology companies to give us a good connection everyday and we would like to ask the government to provide electricity every day on time. We would like water as well.
