Introducing myself and my journal

About Me:Through the internet I have made friends in many countries. It is an amazing tool for making connections, sharing ideas and finding information.

I am at university doing a Computer Science degree. I am in my forties, so a little older than most students. I went straight from school to work, so when I lost my job I decided to take the opportunity for further study.

I strongly believe that women should be treated as equals everywhere in the world, and that technology can play a part in making that happen.

Bonjour Aline

Il est agréable de vous entendre. Vous êtes la première personne à me dire bonjour depuis que j'ai rejoint World Pulse! Je vois dans votre profil que vous êtes un étudiant trop. Qu'est-ce que vous étudiez?

Mary

Hello Aline

It is nice to hear from you. You are the first person to say hello to me since I joined World Pulse! I see from your profile that you are a student too. What are you studying?

Hi Mary I'm also from Uk and just wanted to say hi. I'm currently teaching but I'm thinking of changing into social work, but thought of studying again is quite daunting when it has been so long! How are you finding it and managing your bills etc? I have applied to uni but I think it's taking that step into the unknown when I have had a comfortable, but becoming unchallenging, role for so long. Hope all is good and I think you may have been on the skype call the other day?

Hi Sarah

It has been a bit of a challenge, but getting used to it now. All of the other students on my course are under 25 - all good people, but would be nice to have one or two around my age. Was really nervous doing my first proper exams for over 20 years a couple of weeks ago!

In my case it was kind of a last minute decision - although I had worked in IT, when I lost my job, looked around the job market and found my skills were a bit out of date making it hard to get a job in the area where I live, I decided to go to uni and got a place a week after the course had started as they still had spaces. You have a little more time to think about it and plan :) I would say, check out the course and the university, then decide if it works for you. And if it does, go for it :) Feel free to drop me a private message if you would like more info on my experience.

I was on the Listener call on Thursday afternoon.

Mary,

I'm excited to read about your real world experiences and new studies in IT! I wonder if you would be willing to compose a piece about digital issues for our Women Weave the Web Campaign? I'd love to hear your thoughts about how technology affects your life and the lives of women around you. And your new course of study might be a perfect subject! You can find out more information about the campaign here, http://worldpulse.com/about/blog/announcing-the-digital-literacy-phase-o.... It would be fabulous to have your voice join others as we think through issues around digital literacy in all its complexity.

By participating, you will be joining a global community of women speaking out on the importance of digital inclusion and empowerment for women. Your voice will be delivered to powerful decision makers such as government officials, leaders in the technology industry, and policy makers at international organizations. In addition to influencing global agendas, your submission to the campaign will open the door to incredible opportunities such as:

· Being selected to represent World Pulse at influential international forums. This is your chance to meet key players and make your voice count!

· Connecting and building relationships with grassroots women leaders around the world. Be part of a community of thousands of women speaking out on this issue!

· Exploring and sharing resources for your work on our Campaign Resources page. Find support for your initiatives from funding to volunteers and supporters!

· Getting your voice heard on a global scale! World Pulse will analyze and collate your stories to deliver recommendations to influencers and decision makers on a global scale.

· Getting visibility and support for your work. Your story could be featured on our site, included in an e-magazine, or even published by well-known media outlets!

And the 2014 Lynn Syms Prize will be awarded to an outstanding grassroots woman and visionary voice using digital tools to effect change and advance her community work. The prize will include a $20,000 monetary prize to be paid out over two years to support her community based work, a feature profile on WorldPulse.com, and an all-expense paid trip to speak her message in New York City. You can find more on the website, http://worldpulse.com/campaigns/www/www-women-weave-the-web-campaign-prizes

I hope you'll participate!

Wishing you peace,

Mary S
