Hello World Pulse sisters,

I will be speaking at Laurentian University - Université Laurentienne, Faculty of Health Sciences - April 22, 2020, at 2:00 pm EST on FGM. Canadian girls are being taken out of the country to have it performed, and immigrants in the country are not being provided with support to cope with issues that may arise even years after FGC has taken place.

FGM was added to Canada’s Criminal Code in 1997 under Section 268 in the form of “aggravated assault.” Anyone involved in FGM can be charged parents who willingly participate in or plan for the practice, for example. It is also illegal to take children out of the country to have the practice performed, a concept known as “vacation cutting.” The Criminal Code indicates that any person who commits aggravated assault could face imprisonment for up to 14 years. The damage wreaked on the female reproductive system means that women who have undergone FGM are twice as likely to die in childbirth. They are also more likely to give birth to a stillborn baby.

I encourage you to break the culture of silence around FGM/C by joining the conversation on Twitter #endFGM #YouthEndFGM #MyIssueTooCanada.

Dear Mesi,
It is such good news that you will be speaking out publicly in April at that University. I know from having the joy of meeting you in person that you will be a commanding presence and those lucky enough to hear you will never forget your message. So important that here in Canada the loopholes in the law are allowing for FGM to be forced on girls through travel home, and also be done here. I will find ways to join the conversation. Thank you for raising this issue, and for offering ways for us to work together.
Much love dear sister,
Tam

Dear Meseret,

Thanks so much for sharing and for all the work you do. I am personally so appalled at such a practice and it is one which is sadly also practiced in my country. I wish you all the best in your presentation.
Could you remember to share the impact with us here? Or are people out there shy to come up to the their stories too?
Light and love
Marie

Female genital mutilation is such a barbaric act that must stop. This act deprives women and girls from emotions. Why have sex if you can't enjoy it. Sex is a form of pleasure and emotional relaxation and there is no point indulging in the act if you can't feel any emotional involvement. Governments should apply more stringent measures to perpetrators of such barbarism
