A Movie Ticket Made Me Do It

Popcorn, previews, anticipation. As I sat down in the movie theatre and the lights began to dim, I had no idea that a miracle had just occurred. Earlier that day I had attended a leadership conference where 100 tickets to pre-screen a movie were being given out. From 10,000 people, I found myself holding a ticket.

Journalling, shopping, swimming. As I debated whether to attend the screening, these seemed like reasonable alternatives to munching on snacks and falling asleep in those oh-so-comfy movie seats. But my curiosity ended up leading me through the cinema doors, and I came out a new person.

Slavery, injustice, abuse. I had just been exposed to the horrors of sex trafficking. Images of victims depicted in the film left me speechless for days. Sleep evaded me like a plague, and my daytime thoughts were consumed with the plight of women and children around the world.

Resolve, education, action. This newfound passion led me to read books, write essays, and spread the message. Women and children are not for sale. Their stories must be told and their lives must be fought for.

Blog, documentary, network. Driving across Canada to make my own documentary and writing about exploitation have enabled me to meet victims, abolitionists, politicians, and law enforcement officers. Unity is the key to eradicating modern day slavery.

Compassion, reformation, determination. This is what change is made of, and my goal is to help people find how they can bring their unique gifts, personalities, and resources to make a difference.

Chance? Destiny? Miracle. I literally received a ticket to my life's calling, and for that I am forever grateful. Wise stewardship of such a gift is now my journey.
