Women and Web 2.0 : A Journey of Vision, Change and Empowerment

Posted April 4, 2013 from India

Men have dominated the internet landscape for years. The slightly antagonistic "online "environment, managed to stifle our voices - but NOT anymore.

With Web 2.0 - the set of "next-generation" internet technologies, women are no longer just a passive voice. We have the tools to create, innovate, publish and connect through a medium which goes beyond gender stereotypes.

Web 2.0 : The excitement of networking and plethora of possibilities:

There are various points about web 2.0 that is both exciting and inspiring for me. Apart from the fact that it provides an outlet for my creative and social pursuits, web 2.0 also serves as my very own free, unrestricted "virtual space" where i can finally be ME. No longer do i have to worry about barriers of any dimension- Identity, ethnicity, or culture. This open inter space of applications not only provides me an experience which is rich in information but is also revolutionary in ways which goes beyond the technical aspects.

With web 2.0 at my side, i feel confident to write, share about topics which matter the most. Be it reading about women activists of Tunisia, or speaking about the rape culture of Syria, or voicing against the (dis)honor killings of India. With web 2.0, i feel i am connected to the world and the world to me.Where earlier women dreaded to speak openly, they are now making headlines and re- writing history by connecting online with the world. That is the power of this new social media and web technology.

The solutions web 2.0 brings to the global women's movement are paramount and are of special relevance today. It is our support system, a confidante, with whom we share our secrets and pour our hearts out. It imbibes everything but hardly complains. A perfect companion who listens.

With the help of these supportive tools, women are finding exciting economic avenues to explore and build their own businesses. We are no longer confined to one role. We are now entrepreneurs, role models, technical experts and social media enthusiasts all with the help of web 2.0.

With video sharing sites like YouTube becoming popular, we are finding women documentary film makers and creative artists, able to showcase their work to a much wider discerning audience. We no longer need to travel in real time to learn a new skill, or master a new language. We no longer need to wait for someone else to start a socially relevant online campaign. With web 2.0 we encourage, activate and inspire people to participate and act.

I believe with these tools at our disposal, we have the potential to build stronger women leaders who can transform and effectively contribute not only to their families but also to the society at large.

With web 2.0 EVERY woman can be a leader, EVERY woman can be a change maker. It represents us.It speaks for us.Therefore it is important to us.

Hi Mukut!

Thank you for your very inspirational words! I loved reading your piece as it represented a great reminder of how Web 2.0 has helped to advance women in our global movement!

My favorite part of your piece was when you said this: "The solutions web 2.0 brings to the global women's movement are paramount and especially relevant today. It is our support system, a confidante, with whom we share our secrets and pour our hearts out. It imbibes everything but hardly complains. A perfect companion who listens"

You are so right Mukut! Web 2.0 represents so much more than just a platform for us to speak upon; it is our confidante and it is a companion who will hear our words and share them with the world!

Thank you once again! Much love & respect xoxoxoxo

"It is our support system, a confidante, with whom we share our secrets and pour our hearts out. It imbibes everything but hardly complains. A perfect companion who listens."

You described it perfectly. We all have the joy and freedom of being ourselves, of not fearing judgment, of knowing that we are heard, of feeling supported. In the past, women had been forced into silence but now our voices can be heard, even with a whisper. Our fears subside, our confidence grows and our courage builds until one day, we are not only speaking out over the web but we are effecting change in our communities, transforming lives and rewriting laws.

Dear Mukut,

Thank you for sharing this essay with all of us. I agree with the comments above that you are a talented, passionate, and powerful writer. I appreciate the specific examples that you weave in your essay from Tunisia, India, and Syria, and also your emphasis that we no longer need to wait for somebody else to begin socially relevant campaigns, as we can begin them ourselves. I would love to learn more about the virtual space that you have created for yourself, where you can be you, as you say, and how this affects your life. This is such an interesting idea with so many layers to explore!

Again, many thanks for sharing.

Kind regards,

Courtney

Such amazing, lovely words. Thank you so much for the encouragement. Appreciate it.

Yes, web 2.0 creates a unique individual virtual space for everybody. For me, that "free, individual space", would be my blogging sphere and the fact that i can connect personally with other members who have similar interests. It is a fun and interactive way to promote my ideas through my writings and also to seek solutions to expand them. Web 2.0 serves to be that creative outlet for me.

Also, if we talk about starting socially relevant campaigns online, i too started one very recently. It was against the wrongfully framed charges against two young girls of Mumbai. They were arrested, harassed and taken into police custody for posting something absolutely harmless, about a political leader, on a social networking site. The two girls were immediately arrested for that and charges were framed against them. My campaign asked the officials to drop the charges immediately and let the girls free. And i am glad that the campaign worked. It managed to garner huge public and media support and finally they did drop the charges and the girls were let free.

Hence, web 2.0 is a powerful tool of innovation which can help in building ideas not only on a personal level but has the capacity to bring change on a global level.

Again thank you for your words of appreciation. It pushes me further to perform better.

Love,

CourtneyPaige
