Working with Vulnerable Children

March 4th’18 we were attending the Hawaz Art afternoon at Radisson BLU Hotel. This art club is run by one of our Volunteers, his name is Kefelegn. This guy gave four classes to the school children where we volunteer.

Last season, before their school closed for three weeks vacation we gave them some assignment to do. Out of the 70 students, only 7 students came back to school with their papers. Out of the seven students, 6 of them are girls.

I spoke to the class, they shouldn’t waste their time only in playing. “Kefelgn taught you about time management. I don’t see you that you are using it. When he asked you what is time for you, you answered to him time is gold. So, why are you throwing away your gold? Why don’t you hide in your time box? Time is the payer for anything you do. If you use it properly, time will give you a proper life. If you waste it idly, time will not be offering you anything.”

I was glad the class was quite and paid me attention.

Our volunteer team bought a 100 birr ticket for the seven students to attend The Radisson BLU Art. We enjoyed hearing the poem, short narratives and motivational speeches which made many of us laugh and laugh until we remain with no strength.

After Radisson, we take the seven students to restaurant for snacks. We had fruit slices. One of the students read for us a poem. She is a seven grader and her work is one amazing piece. Sometimes, young people do wonders. The only boy who did his assignment has a talent to sing. He sang for us two songs. He is very shy and handsome. It’s one the girl who lives close to his house who told us he can sing sweetly. It was good we sat outside not to disturb others, we were twelve with the students. Working with these students really gives hope to us and to them. That day helped me to discover what kind of talent those children have.
