I assure you CHANGE IS GONNA COME

WE ETHIOPIANS ARE ENJOYING THE FRESH BREATH OF A GREAT CHANGE. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A NATION SMILING AT ONCE? YES WE ARE.

I was born when my country had a war with so and so…

I was going to elementary school when there were demonstrations…sounds of bullets…armed soldiers trying to stop demonstrators…

When I was in high school a military jeep driving back and fro with a machine gun pointing to pedestrians….

Young men were registered to go to military camp and participate in the war…

  • We discussed war while walking to church
  • Our parents talk about war over coffee
  • Going and coming to school hearing about war was normal
  • We kneel down and pray about war(to stop it or for victory)

One day, I opened our dictionary which is the largest in our house. When I opened the pages for letter ‘E’ and went down to search if there is a meaning for Ethiopia. Yes, there was.

Ethiopia- war liking people

I checked another old dictionary in my father’s library.

Ethiopia- it’s a picture of a woman in charcoal black. Yes, that’s me, that’s my nation. We are not a war liking people. Unfortunately, we always had war liking governors.

Ethiopia is a country of beautiful nation. We don’t have that charcoal black color indeed, we are beautiful Africans with lighter skin and soft hair. When we go to Asia and Europe, they think we Indians. When we go to other east African countries they call us Mizungu( foreigner- when they describe it in Kiswahili). We are proud to be an African. Our capital city Addis Ababa is a also a capital city for Africa. AU head quarter, UNECA and other big NGO’s based here in Addis.

Four months ago, a man who gives a great respect to his mother for bringing him up with all her wisdom and advises came to power. We have got a leader that hates killings, war, grudges, corruption and preaches unity and love. To hear this in our soil is like a dream or a wish that you’ll never see it in reality. Writers and poet are writing as much as they can. Freedom for press became real for first time. We saw what was going on in our prison. We heard so many secrets about our country. It seems like we don’t know anything about our mother land.

We had been in a war with Eretria more than 20 years, 100,000 lives were gone from both sides. The love and strong bond between these nations is strong. Our leader flew his aircraft to Asmara and meet Mr Esayas Afewerki the president of Eretria. He was welcomed by the Eritreans in unbelievable ways. I was in front of the TV to see that event. All the women, the youth and children who were not born by the time the war were smiling. I see the power of trusting someone, forgiving and hugging your brother creates some unique power on the air. Ethiopia and Eretria smiled together, the twin sisters. What a wonderful opportunity I witnessed! I cried a tear of joy. We never saw Mr. Esayas smiled on any media. I saw him laughing from his heart with Dr. Abiy our new PM. If you saw them how they were hugging each other, it seemed like Mr. Esayas found his lost son. Our PM was one of the youngest soldiers on Ethio-Eretria  war.

Reconciliation without any go-between looks like this.

What if North Korea and South Korea repeat this story, what if the nations who are in manufacturing nuclear bombs change their minds, …etc. We could have a better world.

This is the 21st century. We can sit down and discuss our differences around the table. “A man who slaps his wife’s face to show his superiority is very old fashion.” Every modern society agreed about it.

“But, showing the superiority of one nation over the other nation by owning largest or more dangerous arms is not yet old fashion. Is it?”

Hiroshima and Nagasaki’s story didn’t teach anything for some powerful people of these days.

Why people or nation fights to be superior? The only one who holds all power above all nation is ONE, THE CREATOR. Why people waste their energy in killing their own brothers, sister, mothers, fathers and their children to stay on power which they will never find? What amazes me is, THE PERSON WHO WANTS THAT DIGNITY NEVER BEEN TO WAR FRONT. HE SENDS OTHERS TO DIE FOR HIM, THEN HE CAN BE A HERO.

I wonder: “A man who came from a dust naked, and will go without a penny to unite his mother EARTH.” Why we plan evil to others? Why we go on a war to kill our own sister? Why we try to ruin others’ success? Why can’t we smile when others are happy? Why we kill fathers to make babies cry? Why we burn churches and kill the priests to embarrass Christians? Why we burn mosques and kill their members while they praying?

Knowing that, everybody will be paid according to his deeds at the end, why don’t we invest our money, energy and time to make some nations, families, people smile around us?

God bless my beautiful world.

Hi Lily,

Thanks for sharing your encouraging post. I hope all nations in the world that are still experiencing hatred, war, distress, unequal power and unrest all follow this wonderful example of peace, respect, tolerance and accepting. What a beautiful world it could be:-)

Dear Jill,
That is all we want.
If many of the world leaders were women, our world wold be like that.

Thank you,
Lily

Hi Lily,

For real. It definitely makes you wonder. If women and men embraced both their masculine and feminine sides, rather than judging the other, there would be true peace, harmony and balance.

Jill,
Look around the world. The Ministers, Presidents, Ambassadors of every countries, 90 % are men. So, things are going in power not in wisdom. Women are wise, ....the world should use this wisdom if we need to live in peace.

Thank you.

Lily

Yes, but that is the reality now because the world has been under patriarchal rule for so long. I truly believe if the reverse was true and everything was ruled entirely by women right now there would also be an imbalance. I believe there is peace in the balance and not dominance over one another. Men can be wise, too, but they need to embrace women, as well as characteristics that are usually deemed to be more feminine, which are peace, love, balance and harmony.

You are right Jill. There many guys full of wisdom, but they are away from politics. They don't want to...
But the one who fight for fame or who want to work for their countries, should embrace women and work hand in hand.

Thank you,

Lily

Unfortunately I don't think there's a lot of wisdom, or should I say humility, in politics, period...ha:-) Agreed!

Dear Lily,

This is such good news, and your new leader has so many important values in place. This is what we need. Men who have learned from women priorities that benefit the whole nation, and women leaders who want to solve poverty and end violence, especially an end to all of these wars. You raise important questions here, the reasons behind this fighting for dominance. While too many current world leaders fight for their own personal wealth, they feed seeds of unrest to keep people fighting with each other, over what religion is best, what skin tone is best, though we have many ways to explore spirituality, and though we are all beautiful. These tactics keep us from working together toward a global society based on love, respect and fairness. Your story is thought-provoking dear sister and I especially celebrate with you that your country and Eritrea are finally at peace. You have raised such good questions and offered such good solutions to ponder.

With love in sisterhood and toward an international end to all war,
Tam

Tam,
thank you for reading my post and encouragement. You guys are lucky, your leaders are most of time at peace, I envy you. Your doctors, are the best examples. I admire everything about your country. I really want to visit there someday. A guy who sat under his mom's feet and learn many...from her, lives without violence. If we have more women leaders, or if the world listens to women's voices, all these endless wars could have ended long time ago.
Men don't know what it takes to bring a life to this world. so, when war kills thousands of life per day, they don't feel it.
All human beings are same, the blood that ran in their vessels is red. Anybody can have the religion he chooses, but we should live in respecting others.

I want that day to come.

Many thanks,

Lily

Dear sister,
I have many friends from Bamenda and they are showing me videos, many young people are migrating from Anglophone region. It will come to pass. Today and tomorrow, all Ethiopians across the world are fasting and praying for unity, love and ...pray God to keep the change in peace . There are some groups who are not happy, and write and publish hate speech. We are not afraid, because God is the center of it all.

I will pray with you my dear.

I can see your smile. I pray this peace lasts and grows. Imagine how the country could transform under peacetime after a lifetime with the shadow of war. I truly hope you share your visions with our upcoming Peace and Security Wave in September!

Hello Jensine,
Yes I can share my vision in this month. I can't tell you how people are so happy about the peace we are enjoying right now.
We lived in war, as my mom told me she was born when they were on war with Italian.
I want the little children around us to live and grow in peace.

Thank you,

Lily
