25 July is #OrangeDay! A call on youth to take action against violence against women&girls. In a world that’s younger than ever before, with 1.8 billion people below the age of 24 and some 900 million of them adolescent girls and young women, young people are critical stakeholders in efforts to prevent and end violence against women and girls. As current and future leaders, young people are a driving force for change and can use their knowledge, power and passion to challenge negative attitudes, gender stereotypes and behaviours that set in early and lead to violence. It is crucial to engage youth and ensure their voices heard in the development of strategies, policies and initiatives to prevent and end violence against women and girls. To this end, my team and i embarked on a one-day community awareness campaign in Auta-Balefi, Auta-Gurku community in Karu LGA of Nasarawa State Nigeria, we engaged the youth and especially the girl-child where we adressed issues of child marriage and encouraging the girl child education. We had fun while working in this community, we played a game with the participants, there was Role play with a focus on the importance of education, break-out sessions and my amiable team and i were able to provide all the answers to the questions posed to us in regards to child marriage, education and gender violence in general.
