Early or Forced Marriage

The issue of early or forced marriages is worrisome in South Kivu, especially in our territory; the rate of girls who are minors marrying before they come of age is very high. In our family, a girl child gets married between the ages of 12 and 15, and the boy children get married between the ages of 15 and 18. The girls have no say in choosing their husbands, nor in the engagement. It’s not until the wedding day that the girl sees her husband for the first time. The dowry discussion takes place between the parents, without however including the girl’s mother or the girl herself. This is due to traditional customs as well as the socio-economic crisis.
