Arming Teachers???

The massacre at a Florida high school where 17 people died in early 2018, was a terrible tragedy.  This was the second worst school shooting in U. S. history, after Sandy Hook.

Students need to be protected.  They should not be afraid to attend school.  I am so weary of hearing about school shootings and wish the U. S. would develop saner gun laws.

In this news video, President Trump proposes arming teachers.  As if teachers would be agreeable to having access to guns!  This is a very controversial idea.  We need to raise the age for purchasing a gun and have very strict rules concerning them.

Here is a news video with Trump explaining his answer to school violence:  https://www.bbc.com/news/video_and_audio/headlines/46712066/parkland-sho...     (Source:  BBC)

Hi Dana,

I totally agree about the adoption of "saner gun laws." I also agree about having very strict rules about purchasing and use of them. It's way to easy to purchase them, and use them in the U.S. People's obsession with owning them as a form of "protection" is also a problem along with the constant barrage of violence seen most, if not all forms of media.

Perhaps we can hope for gun reform in 2019. I keep wondering what it will take for real change regarding gun laws in the U.S. Hopefully something before a even more, major shooting:-( It seems that most, or a lot of, politicians are too afraid to stand up to the NRA. Somehow they got way too much power along the way and now it looks like it will be difficult to take that power away and create positive change around this issue, to me. Would you agree?

I appreciate you taking the time to write back. I don't know what it will take to get the NRA to back off. They are certainly a powerful lobby. Unfortunately, many in the U. S. feel they have the right to "bear arms." In my opinion, the Founding Fathers meant this to mean defending ourselves against an in=coming enemy. Canada seems to have reasonable gun laws, also Australia and New Zealand, not to mention the U. K. and Europe. We need to emulate them!

I hope the next candidate for President campaigns for restricted gun ownership, but maybe that's a pipe dream.

Our hope lies in people like Emma Gonzales, who is one of the student activists from the high school shooting in Florida in early 2018. She and many like her are our future leaders, who will be running our country in the future.

You're welcome:-)

Yes, I can see that, about people feeling that right, but I'm not sure what fuels that. There are quite a few "rights" that Americans already don't have but they don't seem to mind about not having them and those "rights" aren't potentially harming others either. I agree the U.S. could totally emulate other countries will healthier, more peaceful gun laws, if that's not an oxymoron.

I hope so, too, on the next Presidential candidate. Yes, the next generation could definitely be the game changers with gun laws and perceptions around them.

Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year! I'm keeping my fingers crossed about the 2020 election. Are you from the States and living in Spain? I believe that's what you told me once. It's beautiful here in NC, sunny and warm. Nice change from the cold, wet rain of the past few days.

Its so sad how this your US has become. For me actually I think retaliation is not the answer. Teachers having guns means they will shot back which is retaliation. Biblically wide is not good. They must be better a better approach to this...

Yes, because now children are saving other children by sacrificing their lives. This is intolerable!

Hello, Dana,

This is tragic! Innocent lives are lost because of irresponsible use of firearms.

I hope things get better in the US. Thanks for sharing!

You have raised voice against one of the alarming issue around the globe. We believe there should be laws regarding the possession of guns.
