CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA EDUCATIONAL SECTOR BY AMIDA OLUWATOSIN

Corruption is dishonest behavior by those in positions of power, such as managers or government officials. Corruption can also include giving or accepting bribes to teachers, lectures, security agency, managers, etc… corruption has become normal routine in our educational sector. So many schools in Nigeria cannot be proud of their student because they have bribed the invigilator for their student to have good result. Because of money, some schools will go ahead to renamed their schools as special center. Let me give an example, I was going to buy something in the market and I saw school poster that A1 guarantee. When I saw the poster I was amazed that how can a school be advertising corruption?

Corruption has made Nigeria student to be lazy and this made wrong student to be admitted into higher institutions. A lot of Nigeria student have diverted of been a student to be criminal.

It is very necessary for Nigeria government to vividly look into Nigeria educational sector in other to have a good leader that has the love of the nation. A principal told a teacher that he was broke and the teacher told him that has he forgotten that WAECE is near that everyone will be rich. What the teacher was trying to tell the principal was that they will collect money for expo from each candidate that will be writing WAECE. Even some of the teacher will sleep with the female candidate in other to give them expo in the examination hall.

There are a lot of things happening in our educational sector that requires attention. Even Nigeria parents are also involved in this corrupt act. You would see a parent giving his or her child money for expo or they would even be asking him/her that has he or she paid money for expo. The essence of this expo is just for the student to pass. And this is the type of student that will be boasting that he has A1 in all subject and you would be like amazing, not knowing that It was not his or her work. Most Nigeria teachers are not teaching student to be successful and be a responsible citizen but rather they are teaching them to be lazy and be a criminal in the society like the so called one million boys disturbing the peace of the society.

There are a lot of corruptions in Nigeria educational sector. Another example is that teachers do exchange result of student for another student because of money. This happened to me when I was in SS2 during our end of the year party, where my 1st position was given to a girl because of money. I discovered the corrupt act by my class teacher when I went to collect my report card the next day that was when I saw my position in the school broad sheet. A lot of things are happening in our educational sector.

You would even see an undergraduate bribing a lecturer to pass or even sleeping with them to pass a course just because she cannot read. ‘There is a saying that the person that knows his way knows book’. And that is what is happening in Nigeria educational sector. So I use this medium to beg our government to restructure Nigeria educational system. Thank you
