TANZANIA: One Day at a Time

It all started as a small joke. People gathered to listen to a story of a girl who had decided to elope with a track driver who had offered to give her a ride to many interesting places. The mother had been looking for her for several days and as she walks past a group of men standing waiting to unload the arriving tracks, she heard one of them telling of the story of a girl.

Her attention shifted to the group and decided to ask them. From the description of one of the men who saw her, this was real. It was her young daughter. It was to take several days before the track comes back. The mother prayed every day for God to protect her daughter.

When she returned she refused to go back to school. The mother and many of her friends and family tried all they could to convince her but in vain. She eventually ran away from home with a different young man. When she resurfaced she was already pregnant. Life changed and today she talks of how she failed herself and parents by not heading to their advice.

She has therefore decided to volunteer in training young girls not to be lured into such traps for she found out that education helps a lot. Most of her age mates are working and earning. This is what some of the girls especially from the urban setup go through. She was counseled to give her hope and today nothing prevents her from moving on and making her life better.

Through my training girls and women are helping others understand the need of protecting themselves.

Today, she says 'she lives one day at a time'
