NEW LEGAL LITREACY VOLINTEERS TRAINED AT ASSIN FOSU

WiLDAF trains 18 new Legal Literacy Volunteers in Assin north municipal on Domestic Violence and the Family Laws

As part of the efforts to create awareness and empower community members to claim their rights and reduce the incidence of Domestic violence, Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF Ghana) with support from Ann McCain through Cross Roads international, Canada held a four day training workshop for 18 community people in the Assin North Municipality. Participants were made up of Chiefs, queen mothers, teachers, persons with disability, traders, immigration service, NCCE, media among others. In her welcome address Ms Bernice Sam the National Programmes Coordinator, WiLDAF Ghana, briefed participants about the project and the support from Ann McCain/CI to reach out to the District with the message on women’s human rights and Domestic Violence in Ghana. She was thankful to all participants for their involvement. She urged participants to participate fully to ensure that the 4 day training is successful.
In an interview with Patricia Isabella Essel, Programme Manager for WiLDAF Ghana she mentioned that the 4 day training is to equip the selected community members with knowledge and skills on the basic family laws (marriage, Divorce, Wills act, Inheritance laws and domestic violence). The training formed part of the many activities outlined to ensure to ensure women have access to justice and the Domestic Violence law put to use.
She urged the trained Legal Literacy Volunteers (LLVs) to effectively use knowledge gained for the development of the district and the nation as a whole.
Participants after the training will embark on public educational activities in their communities and advocate for change in customary practices that are harmful to women.

After the four days training, Miss Rosina Akourkor Teye (Director for Dolly Foundation) and Mr. Samuel Kwabena Addo Mensah a journalist at Nkwa FM 88.1 were appointed as the program coordinator at the end of the training. They pledge their support to help end domestic violence in the community.
