As the world reels under the pandemic spread of Corona virus, the mobile phones are buzzing with advisories and exchange of information among the 7.7 Billion people of planet earth. The virus has become a global threat to human beings, their survival and very existence on planet earth. It appears that the world has united politically, socially and otherwise to self educate and inform others of prevention and possible cure. The day is not far when collective wisdom followed by collective action would get us, the human beings, tide over the threat of Corona virus.
Bringing diverse communities for a collective fight against the common enemy has been facilitated by the use of mobile phone technology. The whooping more than 5 Billion mobile phone users, across the world, have mobilized people against the onslaught of Corona virus. The result - Today, we are all getting aware and informed on How to prevent the spread of Corona virus!! I am happy that we are today, together in the time of virus calamity irrespective of caste, class and community.
I am disturbed at the same time, thinking, why the similar promptness in response is not received when we talk about the issue that is as disturbing as Corona virus and which has been there with us since the onset of humanity. I am talking about violence against women. I feel that the mobile phone technology does not work so actively when we want to garner support to shun violence against women. The World Bank calls violence against women, a global pandemic that affects 1 in every 3 women in their lifetime. I feel that what happens to 100% of the population and disrupts the life of every human being, gets more attention and calls for action.
The differences , in this context, may be looked at as -
1. Corona virus affects the entire population on planet earth. Violence against women affects only half of the population on earth.
2. Corona virus quarantines the entire population - men, women alike. Violence against women quarantines only the women in a secluded corner of the house.
I understand that it may not be a very good idea to equate violence against women with deadly Corona virus. But lets not forget that violence against women has been a constant pandemic phenomenon which has caused death and derangement of women over the years. Corona virus has just infested our life recently and may go from our life very soon.
What I am trying to say is that Viruses will keep coming and going But the virus of violence against women would continue to stay and would keep haunting us.
Let our mobile phones buzz with the call to shun violence against women and young girls!!
Let the voice of mobile phone become so powerful that the world gets united in their call for No Violence against women!!
Thank u for sharing
Sadrag, I agree with your comparison of the devastation caused by the Corona virus and the destruction caused by violence against women! In fact, violence affects whole families and its impact spreads across generations. I didn't realize the World Health Organization calls violence against women a worldwide pandemic. I join you in calling for No Violence Against Women!
Hi Pjames,
Absolutely. And its a grave concern that we have learnt to live with the virus of violence against women as an accepted, acknowledged norm for the happiness of society. The society doe not feel that VAW is a pandemic disease, it has conditioned our minds to adjust with it.
Lets together get rid of the virus of VAW!!!
Hi Pjames,
Thanks for your supportive feedback. Welcome to World Pulse and the Encourager group, too! Looking forward to seeing more comments, and posts from you!
Yes Jill

Dear Sadrag, yes, once I started reading your story and worries i was telling myself that the entire world is now concerned because the pandemic is affecting everyone irrespective of gender, age, and race. How I wish such strength could be mobilised to fight against violence against women

Hello, dear sister Sadrag,
What a powerful post! Yes, violence against women is a global pandemic. What do we need to do to make the world listen to us? Should we also create a live counting of VAW cases online for the world to see how many women's lives are in danger every single day?
I love this comparison, dear sister. Very eye-opening. It is a great topic for discussion. Keep it up!
Here you are Karen
Yes we must make the global database on VAW cases
Why not!
Excellent idea. lets develop it together.
Best
mala
Yes, I hope our women tech geniuses could come up with that. :)
Absolutely
With global clock ticking every second, the numbers of VAWs are not just going to be alarming but worrisome for the existence of humankind.
we must work towards it.
Dear Sandrag,
I am so very glad to read your post and agree 100%. That realization that the world governments have the ability to mobilize to stop this epidemic while we women have been told for centuries to be patient and not so selfish as to speak about the epidemic violence against women, is a conversation that is building among women I am in touch with here in my country too, and from other countries as well. We need to build on this alongside the need to end the coronavirus epidemic, especially as now many women are forced to stay inside homes with violent men. Yesterday there was an online meeting of some of the women who were scheduled to speak at the UN (a meeting that got cancelled a few weeks ago). The advantage is that they arranged to meet online and invite any of us lucky enough to find out about it, to listen in. There is a call for an international treaty vs violence against women: the Every Woman Treaty. https://everywoman.org. I hope to find out more and write soon here on World Pulse. Let's all stay in touch about this. Thank you so much for sending this out.
In sisterhood,
Tam

Thank you for sharing. GBV should be call for concern in the global scale.
Yes Fanka, there has to be a global call against VAW.
VAW is no less than Corona virus. It needs to be handled the same way the fight against Corona virus.

Hi Sadrag,
Thank you for sharing this. Be safe dear and take care.
God BLESS you
Thank you Akshaya
Your welcome dear
I couldn't have said this any better. The same energy that is placed right now on the coronavirus pandemic should be placed on speaking out and standing up against gbv globally. Oh what a day when we see thousands, millions across every ethnic groups, country standing in global university...and not just for 16 days from November to December, but everyday if needs be. I love you, Sadrag, as a sister for raising this issue now. Stay blessed.
Hi Valdeen,
Lets pass on the energy from one to another and create such a coalition that speaks till the objective is achieved,
NO to VAW!!!
