Safecity Emerging Leader : Soyra Gune

My name is SoyraGune and I had the pleasure of working under Vandita Morarka for the Legal Research Internship. This internship helped me realise different laws related to sexual violence as I was one of the interns responsible for creating a legal toolkit which Safecity plans to use to educate college students about these laws. The legal toolkit project helped sharpen my research skills as I had to collect cases related to each law. It was interesting to find out the shortcomings in our laws on sexual violence and how different sexual violence cases have helped improve the legislation on sexual violence.

Another responsibility of mine during the internship was preparing a weekly write up on sexual violence cases which had taken place during the week. It was disheartening to see a large number of cases which were being reported in just one week but it also provided a bit of inspiration for me to fight against the patriarchy and one of its ugliest forms, sexual violence.

• People tend to say this a lot but I am going to say it anyway: “I want to make the world a better place.” I want to help people who have been at the receiving end of oppression whether be it on the basis of their gender, race, caste or other parts of their identity which have led them to face discrimination. In light of this sort of inner mission, I am currently pursuing a B.A. in Economics from Azim Premji University. I am still not sure whether I will pursue a career in public service or academics (both very appealing). But I know whatever I do, I will always remain a social justice warrior at heart.

I would like to thank Safecity again, for this lovely opportunity. The internship was right up my lane of interest and cemented my belief that any amount of effort, however small, can help make our society a better place.
